I will be spending a few weeks in Seoul and a large part of that will be in Songpa-gu (specifically Jamsil-dong) district. Any recommendations for cafes, bbq, or any other favorite restaurants would be very much appreciated!

honestly skip the lotte world mall chaos sometimes and head to garak market instead, it's a 10 min bus ride from jamsil and the food there is next level. the sundae gukbap at the indoor market stalls is like 8,000 won and the broth is super rich, way better than any tourist spot. for cafes there's a tiny place called coffee lab near songpa station exit 3 that does a killer yuja (citron) ade but they roast their own beans too if you're into that. also the tteokbokki at the old lady's cart outside songpa elementary school around 4pm is legit, she's been there for like 20 years and it's only 3,000 won a cup

There's a great little place called Myeongdong Kyoja in Lotte World Mall's food court, their kalguksu is legit and way better than you'd expect from a mall spot. Also worth walking over to Seokchon Lake at sunset and grabbing fried chicken from one of the tents, it's a whole vibe with the view.

Yeah if you're in Jamsil, don't sleep on the soondae place hidden in the alley behind Jamsil station exit 3, it's called Hwangso Soondae and their bossam set with the spicy rice cakes is what locals line up for. For a chill cafe, Walked In near Seokchon Lake has a weirdly good black sesame latte and the outdoor seats are perfect for people watching.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
