First timer Seoul - are there alternatives to AirBnB and hotels?

I honestly am not the biggest fan of hotels, maybe because I can only afford cheaper, normal room size, and not luxurious and spacious suites

I like to actually "live" in a place instead of visiting. This is more difficult when you are staying short term only (about 10 days). I have seen enough touristy stuff in my life, so just observing and taking part in the daily life excites me already enough

Back to accommodation - are there any other platforms that the expensive Airbnb?

Seoul is just quite expensive it seems, so that's going to be a challenge

honestly if you're trying to actually live somewhere for 10 days look into minbak in residential areas like seongbuk or buamdong. they're basically old korean houses converted into short term rentals, usually run by an ajumma who lives on site. you get a tiny room with a shared bathroom and kitchen, but the vibe is way more like staying with a distant relative than a tourist. i found mine through naver blog posts, not any app

another option nobody mentions is jjimjilbangs. yeah theyre bathhouses but a lot of them in non tourist areas have sleeping rooms that are basically private capsules. you get a locker and access to the sauna pools and lounges for like 15-20k won a night. not for everyone but if you're really trying to observe daily life theres no better place than a neighborhood bathhouse at 6am watching grandpas play baduk

fwiw seoul's expensive but if you stay north of the river in areas like jongno or seongbuk you can eat at gimbap shops for 4-5k and walk everywhere. the real cost killer is transportation if you stay in gangnam or yeouido

yeah seoul's gotten pricier for sure but you might like gosiwons or hasukjibs if ur actually trying to live like a local. they're basically tiny private rooms meant for students or workers, super bare bones but you get a bed desk and usually a shared kitchen or bathroom. not on any app really though, you gotta find them through naver or just walk around areas like hongdae or sinchon and look for signs

if u want something more comfortable but still not a hotel try a service residence like the ones in gangnam or jongno. they're like small apartments with a kitchenette and washer, usually run by a hotel company but way more homey. i've seen some on yanolja for like 60-80k won a night which is cheaper than most airbnbs now

also check out guesthouses in neighborhoods like mangwon or seongsu. they're not the party type, more like shared houses where you get a private room and the owner might be chill about showing u around. way easier to get local tips that way than staying in a hotel bubble

You're overthinking this. Just use Yanolja or Good Choice. They're Korean booking sites that have tons of minbak and pension options that never show up on Airbnb. Much cheaper too, like 40-60k a night for a whole studio in places like Changsin or Hongje

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
