Hi guys!

My wife and I just moved to Seoul in January for work, it's been a blast so far but were looking forward to learning how to really learn the language. (Hello/thank you is starting to fall a bit short)

I'm looking up some Korean courses/programs but as far as I can see the two main solutions seem to be either online classes with privates institutions which apparently tend to cost an arm and a leg,

Or university but this doesn't seem to really be compatible with classic working hours.

Are there other alternatives? Where did you/would you go if you had to learn Korean in Seoul as an adult foreigner?

if you're both working full time look at YBM or Pagoda evening classes, they run 7-9pm tracks at the Jongno branches and its way cheaper than 1:1 tutoring. 3 months per level, around 200k a term. not free like the gu office stuff but the pacing is better if you actually want to move fast.

another thing people sleep on: Sogang KLEC has a Saturday-only program. its on campus in Sinchon, 9 to 1, runs about 12 weeks. designed exactly for ppl with jobs. i did level 1 there and the speaking focus is way better than the grammar-heavy uni courses.

for your wife and you together, honestly just grab a tutor off italki for 15k an hour twice a week and do the free KIIP stuff on the side. combo works better than any single thing imo

the free option nobody mentions: 구청 cultural centers run Korean classes for like 30-50k per term, way cheaper than the hagwons. yongsan-gu office has one that fills up fast so check your local gu website in february and august when registration opens. hours are usually 2x a week evenings which actually works if ur off at 6

also look into the 사회통합프로그램 (KIIP) through socinet.go.kr, its technically for people heading toward citizenship but level 0 and 1 are open to anyone and its basically free. classes at seoul global center near anguk station too, they do saturday intensives

Since you're both at the same level, look at the Seoul Global Center's free Korean classes too, they run out of the 3rd floor near Anguk and split into weekday evening and Saturday morning groups. Different from the gu office stuff because they actually sort you by a placement test, so you won't sit through 알파벳 review if you already read hangul. Registration opens quarterly and you have to show up in person on the first day, spots go to whoever's there early.

One thing nobody warns you about: the biggest jump comes from using it outside class. My Korean only started moving once I forced myself to order at the market in Korean instead of pointing, and stopped letting my wife handle the phone calls. Pick one small daily transaction each and do it in Korean no matter how slow it goes.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
