Hi,

My partner and I are intending to travel to South Korea. This won't be our initial visit, but this time, we plan to extend our stay using the holy Working-Holiday Visa.

We'd like to find accommodation that meets the following criteria:

More economical than hotels (obviously) Say less than $1000 a month ($500 each). Above that price, hotels will be our pick...

Preferably located in Myeong-dong, Itaewon, or nearby

2 rooms

Offering some flexibility (the ability to vacate the apartment with short notice - it's a trip after all)

We know about guesthouses, and while these could be interesting, it would be only occasional for us. We heard about goshiwon, but they don't look ideal for 2 tenants.

Could you kindly suggest websites, keywords, or any other recommendations for this purpose?

One thing nobody's flagged: you can't actually sign a standard Korean lease on a Working Holiday Visa without a Korean bank account and ARC, and you won't have those for your first few weeks. So the practical move is to book a residence-style place for your first month or two, then apartment hunt once you're here with paperwork in hand. Look at places like Urbanstay or the residency floors at some of the newer hotels around Euljiro and Chungmuro, they do monthly rates around 1.3 to 1.6m for a two-person studio and you can extend week by week.

If you want a proper 투룸 under 1m, you'll have to look a bit further out than Myeong-dong. Sookmyung Women's University area (Sookdae-ipgu, line 4) and the streets behind Noksapyeong have lots of two-rooms in that range because students drive the market. It's one stop or a 20 minute walk from the areas you mentioned. Naver 부동산 listings there often show 단기 options that the big apps bury.

Also worth knowing, deposits on short-term leases (반전세 or 단기) in that price band are usually 3 to 5m krw, not the 10m you might see quoted for standard 2-year contracts. Landlords are more flexible on deposit if you pay a bit more monthly.

For 1m krw/month total you're looking at officetels or a two-room in a share house, not goshiwon (you're right, those are single-occupancy cells). Check Zigbang and Dabang apps, but filter for "officetel" and "투룸" around Itaewon or Huam-dong, which is walkable to both Myeong-dong and Itaewon and cheaper than either. Realistically you'll need a deposit (보증금) of 5-10m krw even on a short lease, and most landlords want 6+ months, so short-notice flexibility is the hard part. Your best bet for that is a monthly Airbnb or a "단기임대" listing, which will run closer to 1.2-1.5m for two rooms but comes furnished and you can leave on 30 days notice.

honestly the 2-room requirement is what's gonna kill your budget in Myeong-dong or Itaewon. that area is prime real estate and a proper two-room (투룸) there basically starts at 1.5m krw even on jeonse-lite terms. if you loosen it to one big room with a separate kitchen you open up way more options, and couples do this all the time here.

couple things people dont mention. look at 부동산 (realtor) offices in person around Huam-dong or Yongsan, because the good short-term stuff never hits the apps. and check Naver Cafe groups for "단기임대" or "외국인 임대", landlords who rent to foreigners post there directly. also a "텔" style residence or a share house run by outfits like WECO or Bunk, they do furnished rooms with 1-3 month minimums and no huge deposit, which fits your flexibility thing way better than a normal lease.

just budget for the deposit regardless. even short-term wants 1-3m krw key money, you get it back but its tied up while ur there.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
