I've been to Seoul 10 years ago and am aware that Hongdae is for the younger crowd. I might visit there anyway but I'd still like to know whats a great club nowadays for the older crowd (im 34m). Im only aware that Itaewon and Gangnam usually have some spots for that.

I've been to Octagon and loved it but heard it's closed even though google says it's open. Im Chinese American but often get mistaken as Korean when I visited if that matters.

Skip the Itaewon clubs for now, they've been a bit of a mess since the crowd got even more mixed after the Halloween incident. Try Cakeshop in Seongsu-dong, it's a bit more underground and draws a late-20s to 40s crowd that actually wants to dance without the bottle service pressure. The sound system there is excellent and they book decent international DJs sometimes. If you want something closer to Gangnam, Pongdang is a good alternative to Octagon - smaller but the bouncers won't hassle you about the foreigner pricing if you look Korean and just say "한국말 해요" when they start.

Octagon is definitely still open and running, I was there a few weeks ago. For your age group, try Club Made in Itaewon or Faust, both draw a solid late-20s to 30s crowd and don't feel as packed with students. If you want something more low-key, the speakeasy bars around Hannam-dong are worth a look, places like Alice or Bar Cham have better conversation vibes than a loud club floor.

yeah Octagon's still going strong, don't worry about google being outdated. for your age group I'd actually skip Itaewon these days, it's gotten kinda touristy and the vibe's shifted. Gangnam's your best bet, check out Arena or Mass, both pull a 30+ crowd that actually knows how to dress and behave. they're a bit pricier than Hongdae spots but you won't feel like the oldest guy there. also if you get mistaken for Korean, brush up on a few phrases like "한국 사람 아니에요" cause bouncers might try to hit you with the local pricing or just wave you past the foreigner line

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
