🏰 Explore Old Town
Riga's Old Town (Vecrīga) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you can easily spend a day wandering its cobblestone streets. Start at the House of the Blackheads (Rātslaukums 7) and climb the tower of St. Peter's Church (Skārņu iela 19) for panoramic views. The Three Brothers (Mazā Pils iela 17, 19, 21) showcase medieval architecture, and the Riga Castle (Pils laukums 3) is the official residence of the President. In 2026, many museums offer free entry on the last Sunday of each month, so plan accordingly.

🎨 Discover Art Nouveau
Riga is home to the world's finest collection of Art Nouveau architecture, with over 800 buildings, mostly in the Quiet Center (Klusais centrs). The Alberta iela (Alberta Street) is the epicenter, featuring masterpieces by Mikhail Eisenstein. Don't miss the Riga Art Nouveau Center (Alberta iela 12) for a deeper dive; admission is around 5 EUR. Guided walking tours run daily at 10 AM and 2 PM from the corner of Alberta and Elizabetes streets.

🛍️ Shop at Central Market
The Riga Central Market (Nēģu iela 7) is Europe's largest market, housed in five former Zeppelin hangars. It's a great place to sample local cheeses, smoked fish, and rye bread. Open daily from 7 AM to 6 PM (until 5 PM on Sundays). Bring cash for the best deals, and try the fresh produce from the Latgale region. In 2026, a new food hall section will open, featuring trendy eateries.

🌳 Relax in Parks
Riga is a green city with many parks perfect for a break. The Vermanes Garden (Terbatas iela 2) is central and hosts free concerts in summer. For a quieter spot, head to Kronvalda Park (Kronvalda bulvāris) along the city canal, where you can rent a boat. In 2026, the city plans to add more seating and free Wi-Fi in these areas. The Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia (Kandavas iela 2) is also worth a visit, with an entry fee of 3 EUR.

🍽️ Taste Local Cuisine
Latvian cuisine is hearty and flavorful. Try traditional dishes like grey peas with bacon, and rye bread at Lido (Elizabetes iela 65), a popular chain with a rustic atmosphere. For a modern twist, book a table at 3 Pavāru Restorāns (Riharda Vāgnera iela 6), where a tasting menu costs around 60 EUR. Don't leave without trying Riga Black Balsam, a herbal liqueur, at a local bar like Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs (Peldu iela 19).

🎭 Experience Culture
Riga has a vibrant cultural scene. The Latvian National Opera (Aspazijas bulvāris 3) offers world-class performances at reasonable prices, with tickets starting at 10 EUR. Check the schedule for the Riga International Film Festival in October 2026. The Kalnciema Quarter (Kalnciema iela 35) hosts a weekly market on Saturdays with live music and local crafts. For contemporary art, visit the Latvian National Museum of Art (Jaņa Rozentāla laukums 1), which has a 8 EUR entry fee.

🚶 Cross the River
Take a stroll across the Vanšu Bridge or the Akmens Bridge to the Left Bank (Pārdaugava) for a different perspective of the city. The Āgenskalns neighborhood is becoming a hip area with trendy cafes and the Kalnciema Market. In 2026, a new tram line extension will make it easier to reach. Don't miss the view of the Old Town skyline from the Daugava promenade, especially at sunset.

🎉 Enjoy Nightlife
Riga's nightlife is diverse, from cozy bars to large clubs. The Old Town is packed with options, but for a more local vibe, head to the Āgenskalns or Miera iela areas. Try the cocktails at Bar 8 (Miera iela 8) or dance at Essential (Jauniela 24). In 2026, the city will host the Riga Summer Sound festival in July, featuring international DJs. Note that many clubs have a dress code, so check before you go.

solid guide, covers the main stuff well

one thing id add is the Miera iela area for coffee & brunch, not just nightlife. Mītava and Rocket Bean are both on there and its a nice half day if the old town crowds get to u

also if ur here in june the Jāņi stuff around Līgo is worth timing a trip for, tho most of the big celebrations happen outside the city

for the market, go before 10am on a weekday if u actually want to shop, weekends are a zoo

arrow_drop_up 9 arrow_drop_down

this is a genuinely thorough list, saving it for when friends visit

since nobody mentioned it yet, the view from the top of the Latvian Academy of Sciences is arguably better than st peters and it costs like 3 eur, plus its a proper soviet-era time capsule. go up around 9pm in summer for the sunset over the old town, the lift is sketchy in a charming way

also the Riga balsam thing, dont just shoot it. get it with blackcurrant juice or in a hot black balsam at a bar, thats how locals actually drink it in winter

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

good writeup, the art nouveau bit is spot on but i'd push people a little further out than alberta iela. walk up strēlnieku iela and elizabetes iela toward the embankment, some of the best facades are there and you'll have them to yourself since everyone crowds alberta

also for the market, the smoked fish stalls in the hangar closest to the canal are the move, and if u want the real latvian experience grab a sklandrausis from one of the older ladies, its a carrot and potato tart, super cheap and u wont find it in restaurants really

one thing the guide missed: the corner house / kgb museum on brīvības iela. its heavy but its the most important museum in the city for understanding what happened here, book a guided tour slot in advance cause walk ins get turned away a lot

🏰 Day 1: Old Riga
Start at 9:00 at the House of the Blackheads (Rātslaukums 7) and join a guided tour for €10. Then walk 5 minutes to St. Peter's Church and climb the tower for panoramic views (€9, open 10:00-18:00). At 12:30, have lunch at Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs (Peldu iela 19) for traditional Latvian food, around €15. Afternoon: explore Riga Castle, the Three Brothers, and the Swedish Gate. End the day with dinner at 19:00 at 3 Pavāru Restorāns (Torņa iela 4) for modern Latvian cuisine, about €40 per person.

🎨 Day 2: Art Nouveau & Markets
Begin at 9:00 at Riga Central Market (Nēģu iela 7), a 10-minute walk from Old Riga. Sample local cheeses and smoked fish; breakfast at a stall costs around €5. At 11:00, take tram 11 or walk 20 minutes to the Art Nouveau district, focusing on Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela. Visit the Riga Art Nouveau Center (Alberta iela 12) for €9 (open 10:00-18:00). Lunch at 13:30 at Fazenda (Dzirnavu iela 34) for hearty Latvian dishes, about €12. Afternoon: explore the Latvian National Museum of Art (Jaņa Rozentāla laukums 1) for €10. Dinner at 19:30 at Bibliotēka No 1 (Dzirnavu iela 35) for creative local fare, around €25.

🌳 Day 3: Parks & Left Bank
Start at 9:30 at Bastejkalna Park and stroll along the canal to the Freedom Monument. Then cross the Vanšu Bridge on foot (15 minutes) to Ķīpsala island for views of the skyline. At 12:00, have lunch at Kīpsala Restaurant (Ķīpsalas iela 8) for grilled dishes, about €15. Afternoon: visit the Latvian National Library (Mūkusalas iela 3) and take the elevator to the 12th floor for free panoramic views (open 10:00-20:00). At 16:00, walk 20 minutes to the Riga Central Market for last-minute souvenirs. End with dinner at 19:00 at Restorāns Vincents (Elizabetes iela 19) for fine dining, around €60 per person.

🚌 Getting Around
Riga's public transport (trams, buses, trolleybuses) costs €1.50 per ride if you buy a e-talons card at kiosks; a 24-hour pass is €5. The Old Town is compact and walkable, but for longer trips use tram 11 to the Art Nouveau district (10 minutes) or bus 3 to the Left Bank (15 minutes). Taxis like Bolt are cheap: a 10-minute ride costs around €5. Avoid hailing unofficial taxis at the airport; use the Bolt app or the official taxi rank.

🍽️ Where to Eat
For budget meals, try Lido (Elizabetes iela 55) for hearty Latvian buffet, around €8 per person. Mid-range options include Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs (Peldu iela 19) for traditional food and live music, about €15-20. For fine dining, book ahead at Vincents (Elizabetes iela 19) or 3 Pavāru Restorāns (Torņa iela 4), both around €40-60. Don't miss Riga Black Balsam, a local herbal liqueur, at any bar.

💰 Budget Tips
Riga is affordable compared to Western Europe. A mid-range hotel in Old Town costs €60-100 per night; hostels start at €15. Many museums have free entry on the last Sunday of each month. Lunch specials (business lunch) at local restaurants are €5-8. Buy a Riga Card (€30 for 24 hours) for free public transport and museum discounts if you plan to visit many sights.

🌙 Evening Activities
Old Riga has lively bars like Aussie Pub (Valnu iela 12) and Shot Cafe (Tirgoņu iela 10). For a cultural evening, check the Latvian National Opera (Aspazijas bulvāris 3) for performances; tickets start at €10. In summer, enjoy a sunset walk along the Daugava promenade or take a boat tour (€15, 1 hour). Nightclubs like First Dacha (Lāčplēša iela 10) stay open until 5:00 on weekends.

📅 Seasonal Notes
Summer (June-August) is peak season with long days and outdoor events like the Riga City Festival in August. Winter (December-February) brings Christmas markets in Old Town and Doma Square, but temperatures drop to -10°C, so pack warm layers. Spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper, with mild weather ideal for walking tours. Check local event calendars for concerts and festivals during your visit.

Good writeup, the structure is genuinely useful. One thing I'd push back on is Day 1's lunch timing at Folkklubs. It's a basement place and fills up fast, by 12:30 on a weekend there's a queue down Peldu iela, so either go at 12:00 sharp or book. Also the live music most nights doesn't start until around 20:00, so if that's the draw, dinner there makes more sense than lunch.

For the market, the existing comment about pavilions is right but I'd add that the cheese stall in the dairy pavilion sells fresh biezpiens that's worth grabbing with a jar of black bread, cheap breakfast. And on the Riga Card, it's only worth it if you're hitting three or more paid museums in 24 hours, otherwise you lose money since most of the big sights like St. Peter's aren't fully covered, only discounted.

One seasonal note the guide skips: late June around Jāņi (June 23 to 24) the whole city basically shuts for two days and everyone heads to the countryside, so don't plan a museum-heavy trip then.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

solid itinerary, covers the main stuff well. one thing id add for Day 2: the Central Market pavilions are split by product, the fish one is the far pavilion near the river and thats where the good smoked stuff is. also if you're there on a weekday morning its way calmer than saturday when half of Riga shows up.

for Day 3, the Vanšu Bridge walk is fine but honestly the Ķīpsala side gets windy and a bit bleak, i'd swap it for the ferry from Old Riga to Zaķusala or just walk the other direction along the promenade toward the library. and the library 12th floor is great but theres also a free viewing terrace on the 11th that fewer people know about.

one correction on transport, the e-talons card itself costs 2 euro as a deposit on top of the ride, so a single ride is really 1.50 plus that one time. if you're only doing 2 or 3 rides just tap a contactless bank card, its the same 1.50 now and no deposit.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

This is a really well put together plan, saving me a lot of research for my trip next spring. One thing I'd add from my last visit: book the St. Peter's tower and the Art Nouveau Center online the day before, the walk up queues at St. Peter's can eat an hour in July and they cap entries. Also the Three Brothers courtyard on Mazā Pils iela is easy to walk straight past, the sign is tiny, so watch for the number 17 or you'll miss it entirely.
