Hi, i'm asking specifically here instead of r/japantravel because i don't want a tourist recommendation. and i'm banned from japanlife lol

i want a recommendation from residents for residents.

I work mostly homeoffice and it's unbearable hot in tokyo.

I want to go to a small town & rent for a month an airbnb or something. I don't care if it's deep in the mountains or somewhere at the beach. πŸ‘

Any recommendations? It can be anywhere in Japan. πŸ‘

well, so better said: i dont look for a vacation. i look for a place to live for a month

karuizawa is the obvious one but honestly it's gotten touristy in summer. try toshi or kiyosato in yamanashi instead. cool even in august, tons of empty airbnbs, and you're close enough to hop into nagano for a day. rent a car though, public transport out there is basically nothing.

if you want the coast, i'd say shimoda in izu. it's hot but the sea breeze keeps it bearable, and the town is dead quiet on weekdays. you can surf in the morning, work in the afternoon, and the konbini is a 5 min walk. just avoid the onsen ryokan types, they're pricey for a month.

for something more random, check out unnan in shimane. cheap as hell, rice fields everywhere, and the local supermarket is an experience. not a single tourist around, but you need a car for sure. also, the wifi in rural spots can be sketchy, so bring a pocket router or check the listing for fiber before booking.

If you want to dodge the heat entirely, head to Hokkaido. Furano or Biei are the classic picks but they're packed in summer. Try Nakafurano, the smaller neighbor, or even further out to the coast at Rumoi. August there is genuinely pleasant, like a Tokyo autumn, and you can get a whole house on Airbnb for what a closet costs in the city. You'll need a car though, and the konbini situation gets sparse, so stock up.

Another option: Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, but skip the touristy Wajima side and go for Suzu or Monzen. It's quiet, the sea is cold enough to feel refreshing, and the local seafood is unreal. Still hot, but the evenings drop off hard. Just check the fiber optic situation before booking, some of those old machiya have terrible internet.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
