🏯 Gifu Castle and Park
Start your Gifu visit at Gifu Castle, perched atop Mount Kinka and reachable by a ropeway that runs every 15 minutes from 9:00 to 17:00 (round trip 1,100 yen). The castle's observation deck offers panoramic views of the Nobi Plain and Nagara River, and on clear days you can see all the way to Nagoya. Insider tip: visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and catch the sunrise over the mountains. The surrounding Gifu Park is free to enter and houses the Gifu City Museum of History, which details the castle's role in feudal Japan.

🎣 Cormorant Fishing Experience
From May 11 to October 15, the Nagara River comes alive with ukai, traditional cormorant fishing, a practice dating back over 1,300 years. Board a wooden boat (around 3,500 yen for adults) from Nagarabashi Bridge and watch as master fishermen guide cormorants to catch ayu sweetfish by torchlight. The best views are from the boats, but you can also watch for free from the riverbank near Gifu Park. Book through the Gifu City Tourist Information Center, as evening tours fill up quickly.

🍣 Savor Hida Beef
Gifu is famous for Hida beef, a premium wagyu brand from the Hida region. For an affordable taste, try the beef skewers at the morning market in Takayama (around 500 yen) or splurge on a multi-course meal at a restaurant like Maruaki in Gifu City (dinner from 8,000 yen). The meat is known for its fine marbling and melt-in-your-mouth texture. Many local supermarkets also sell Hida beef bento boxes for a quick, delicious lunch.

🏘️ Explore Historic Takayama
Take a 1.5-hour train ride from Gifu Station to Takayama, a beautifully preserved Edo-period town. Wander through the Sanmachi Suji district, where sake breweries and craft shops line the streets, and visit the Takayama Jinya, a former government house (admission 440 yen). The Miyagawa Morning Market (open 7:00 to 12:00) is perfect for local snacks and souvenirs. Consider staying overnight to enjoy the quiet evening atmosphere after day-trippers leave.

🏞️ Shirakawa-go Day Trip
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Shirakawa-go is a village known for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs. From Gifu, take a bus from Takayama (50 minutes, 2,600 yen one way) or join a guided tour. The village is stunning in all seasons, but winter illumination events (January to February) require advance reservations. Be sure to try the local soba noodles and pick up a jar of sansho pepper as a souvenir.

♨️ Relax in Hot Springs
Gifu is home to several onsen towns, with Gero Onsen being one of Japan's top three hot spring resorts. The water is known for its skin-beautifying properties, and many ryokan offer day-use bathing (from 500 yen). For a more secluded experience, head to Okuhida Onsen, where outdoor baths overlook the Northern Alps. Check for combined tickets that include bus travel and bathing.

🎎 Discover Local Crafts
Gifu has a rich craft heritage, including Mino washi paper and Seki knives. Visit the Mino Washi Paper Museum in Mino City (admission 500 yen) to see traditional papermaking techniques and try your hand at making a postcard. In Seki, the Cutlery Hall showcases the region's knife-making history, and you can purchase high-quality blades as practical souvenirs. Many workshops offer English guidance upon request.

🚌 Getting Around Gifu
Gifu is well-connected by trains and buses, but some rural attractions require careful planning. The Gifu Bus offers a one-day pass for 1,000 yen that covers major city sights, while the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (5 days, 15,000 yen) is great for exploring the wider region. For Shirakawa-go, reserve bus seats in advance during peak seasons. Renting a car can be convenient for visiting onsen towns and rural craft villages, but note that international driving permits are required.

The Mino washi museum in Mino city is worth the detour, and the papermaking workshop there actually lets you keep what you make.

Ukai boats sell out by June, book early.

good writeup. for the castle museum bit, the roofless rebuilt keep has a small display on Oda Nobunaga's "tenka fubu" campaign that most people skip. combine it with a stop at the Cormorant Fishing Museum down by the river, it's cheap and explains the history better than the boats alone

That budget line is maybe a bit low if you eat Hida beef and drink. I'd say closer to 15k. Also for Kawara-machi, the udatsu district in Mino is prettier in the late afternoon light, so flip the order if you can. And note many small shops there close Wednesdays, not just Mondays.

solid writeup. one thing i'd add on day 1: the ropeway plus castle combo ticket is cheaper than buying separately, and the Mt. Kinka trail up takes about 40 min if u skip the cable car. also the castle museum itself is small, most of the value is the view & the squirrel park halfway up.

Book the cormorant boat a day ahead, it sells out.
