πŸ– Hida Beef Essentials
Hida beef is Gifu's signature wagyu, and Takayama is the best place to try it. At Maruaki (6-8 Hanasatomachi, Takayama; open 11am-9pm, closed Wednesdays), a Hida beef steak set runs about 3,500 to 5,500 yen. For a cheaper taste, grab a beef sushi two-piece from the street stalls near Miyagawa Morning Market for around 600 yen.

🍜 Takayama Ramen Shops
Takayama ramen features a soy-based broth with thin, curly noodles and a punch of umami. Menya Tsubaki (2-12 Hachikenmachi, Takayama; 11am-2:30pm and 6-9pm, closed Mondays) serves a classic bowl for 800 yen. Another favorite is Chitose (1-3-10 Showamachi, Takayama; 11am-3pm, closed Tuesdays), where the shoyu ramen costs 750 yen.

🍒 Street Food in Takayama
The streets around Sanmachi Suji are packed with snack stalls. Try the mitarashi dango (soy-glazed rice balls) at Kyoya (1-98 Kamisannomachi, Takayama; 9am-5pm, around 400 yen for two skewers). For a savory bite, the Hida beef croquette at Nikuten (2-60 Honmachi, Takayama; 10am-5pm) costs 250 yen and sells out fast on weekends.

🍣 Hida Sushi and Seafood
Despite being inland, Gifu gets fresh fish from the Sea of Japan via the Hokuriku line. In Gifu City, Sushi Dokoro Kisen (1-7-12 Nagamori, Gifu; 11:30am-2pm and 5-10pm, closed Wednesdays) offers a 10-piece omakase for 2,500 yen. In Takayama, Hida Sushi (5-5 Hanasatomachi; 11:30am-2pm and 5-9:30pm, closed Thursdays) is known for its Hida beef sushi rolls at 1,200 yen.

πŸ₯© Local Izakaya Picks
For a casual evening, head to the izakaya alleys near Gifu Station. Yatai Izakaya (2-4-1 Koganedori, Gifu; 5pm-midnight, closed Sundays) serves grilled Hida beef skewers for 500 yen each and local sake from 600 yen. In Takayama, Ebisu (2-14-2 Hachikenmachi; 5-11pm, closed Mondays) is a tiny spot with a 3,000 yen set menu that includes five small dishes.

🍑 Sweet Treats and Snacks
Gifu is famous for its chestnut sweets, especially in the Nakatsugawa area. At Kurikyu (1-1-1 Nakatsugawa, Nakatsugawa City; 9am-6pm), a box of chestnut kinton (sweet chestnut paste) costs 1,200 yen. In Gifu City, try the gohei mochi (grilled rice cake with walnut miso) at Gohei Mochi no Mise (2-18-1 Nagamori; 10am-5pm) for 300 yen.

🍱 Market Fresh Lunches
The Miyagawa Morning Market in Takayama (open 7am-noon daily) is great for a light lunch. Pick up a bento box from the stalls for around 800 yen, or try the Hida beef skewers from the grill stands for 500 yen. In Gifu City, the Yanagase shopping arcade has cheap lunch sets at Kissaten Yanagase (1-8-1 Yanagase; 11am-3pm, 700 yen for daily pasta).

πŸ’° Budget and Timing Tips
Most restaurants in Gifu offer lunch sets that are 30 to 50 percent cheaper than dinner. Expect to pay 800 to 1,200 yen for lunch and 2,000 to 4,000 yen for dinner. Many local spots close on one weekday, so check hours before you go, and carry cash since some small stalls don't accept cards.

Appreciate the effort here, but the real move in Gifu City is a nagashi somen lunch along the Nagara in summer, around 1,000 yen.

Kisen's omakase is a steal at that price, book ahead tho

Went to Takayama last spring and Chitose's shoyu bowl was the standout, though I'd say the morning market skewers beat any sit-down lunch for value.

That budget line is maybe a bit low if you eat Hida beef and drink. I'd say closer to 15k. Also for Kawara-machi, the udatsu district in Mino is prettier in the late afternoon light, so flip the order if you can. And note many small shops there close Wednesdays, not just Mondays.

solid writeup. one thing i'd add on day 1: the ropeway plus castle combo ticket is cheaper than buying separately, and the Mt. Kinka trail up takes about 40 min if u skip the cable car. also the castle museum itself is small, most of the value is the view & the squirrel park halfway up.

Book the cormorant boat a day ahead, it sells out.
