πŸ—ΊοΈ Day 1: Bazaar and Old City
Start your first day at 9:00 AM in Zanjan's historic bazaar, one of Iran's most authentic covered markets. Spend two hours wandering the alleys, then visit the Jameh Mosque and the Rakhtshooy Khaneh (traditional laundry house) nearby. Break for lunch at a local kebab shop around 1:00 PM, then continue to the Anthropological Museum. End the day with a stroll through the old neighborhood streets before dinner.

πŸ›οΈ Day 2: Soltaniyeh Excursion
Take a morning bus or shared taxi from Zanjan's main terminal to Soltaniyeh, about 40 minutes away. Spend two to three hours exploring the UNESCO-listed Dome of Soltaniyeh and its surrounding complex. Have lunch in Soltaniyeh village, then return to Zanjan by mid-afternoon. In the evening, visit the Zanjan Museum of Handicrafts and enjoy dinner near the city center.

πŸ›οΈ Day 3: Local Crafts and Food
Begin at 9:30 AM with a visit to a knife-making workshop, as Zanjan is famous for its handmade cutlery. Then head to the local market to sample traditional sweets like nan-e berenji (rice bread) and buy souvenirs. After lunch, explore the Kataleh Khor cave area if time permits, or relax in one of the city's tea houses. Finish your trip with a farewell dinner featuring local specialties such as ash-e reshteh.

🚌 Getting Around
Zanjan's city center is compact and walkable, but for longer distances you can use taxis or the local bus system. A shared taxi within the city typically costs 10,000 to 20,000 Iranian rials, while a private taxi might be 50,000 to 100,000 rials. For Soltaniyeh, buses from the main terminal leave every 30 minutes and cost about 20,000 rials. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to cross the city center by car during peak hours.

🍽️ Where to Eat
For authentic local food, try the restaurants around the bazaar, such as the small eateries serving dizi and kebab. A hearty meal at a mid-range restaurant costs around 300,000 to 500,000 rials per person. Don't miss the chance to taste Zanjan's famous walnut halva and other sweets from local confectioneries. Most restaurants open for lunch from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM and for dinner from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

πŸ›οΈ Where to Stay
Most hotels are clustered in the city center, within walking distance of the bazaar and main attractions. Budget options like the Zanjan Hotel offer simple rooms for around 1,500,000 rials per night, while mid-range hotels such as the Dadman Hotel charge about 2,500,000 rials. Book ahead during holidays, as rooms fill up quickly. Staying near the bazaar saves time and taxi fares.

πŸ’‘ Practical Tips
Zanjan has a cold climate, so pack accordingly if you visit between November and March. Carry cash in rials, as many small shops and taxis do not accept cards. Learn a few Persian phrases to make interactions smoother. The best time to visit is spring or early autumn when the weather is mild.

kataleh khor is 3 hours from the city, not a quick detour

the tajnis workshop near the bazaar, mornings

Appreciate the detail here, saving it for a future trip. One thing i'd add is the Mashhadikhani carpet workshops, watching the weaving is way more interesting than the museums. Also the walnut halva is best fresh from the shops near the bazaar.

🏰 Explore the Old Fortress
Start your visit at the Zanjan Fortress (Arg-e Zanjan), a Qajar-era structure in the city center that now houses the Zanjan Museum of Archaeology. The museum displays artifacts from the Achaemenid to the Islamic periods, and the fortress walls offer a glimpse into the city's defensive past. It's open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, except Fridays when it opens at 2 PM. Entry costs about 200,000 rials for foreign visitors.

πŸ•Œ Marvel at Jameh Mosque
The Jameh Mosque of Zanjan, also known as the Masjed-e Jameh, is a stunning example of Qajar architecture with its intricate tile work and grand courtyard. Located on Imam Khomeini Street, it's an active place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly and avoid prayer times. The best time to visit is mid-morning when the light streams through the stained glass. There's no entry fee, but donations are welcome.

🏺 Discover the Salt Men
The Zanjan Museum of Anthropology, housed in a historic building on Taleghani Street, is famous for its collection of "Salt Men," ancient miners preserved in salt from the Chehrabad Salt Mine. The museum also showcases local crafts and traditions. It's open from 8 AM to 4 PM, closed on Mondays. Entry is around 150,000 rials. Don't miss the multimedia exhibit explaining the salt mummies' discovery.

πŸ›οΈ Shop at the Bazaar
Zanjan's covered bazaar is a labyrinth of alleys where you can find everything from copperware to traditional knives. The bazaar is centered around the Sabzeh Meydan (Green Square) and is most lively in the late afternoon. Be sure to bargain politely, as prices are often negotiable. It's a great place to pick up souvenirs like hand-hammered copper plates or local honey.

🍽️ Taste Local Cuisine
Zanjan is known for its hearty stews and dairy products. Head to the traditional restaurant "Shah Neshin" near the bazaar for a taste of Dizi (abgoosht) or Baghali Polo. For a quick bite, try the local specialty "Pirashki" at the bakery on Saadi Street. Dinner is typically served after 8 PM, and a meal for two costs around 1,500,000 rials. Vegetarians can enjoy fresh herbs and walnut stews like Fesenjan.

🌳 Relax in the Parks
Escape the city bustle at Mellat Park, a large green space with a lake and walking paths, located on the eastern edge of Zanjan. It's a favorite spot for families in the evenings, especially during the summer. Another option is the smaller but charming Chahar Bagh Park near the university. Both are free to enter and open until late.

🚌 Getting Around Town
Zanjan has a reliable bus system, but taxis are more convenient for reaching the main sights. Shared taxis (savari) run along fixed routes for about 50,000 rials per person, while private taxis (darbast) cost around 150,000 rials for short trips. Ride-hailing apps like Snapp are available but may have limited coverage. The city is fairly compact, so walking is also a good option in the center.

🏞️ Day Trip to Katalehkhor
If you have time, take a day trip to Katalehkhor Cave, about 120 kilometers southwest of Zanjan. This limestone cave features impressive stalactites and stalagmites and is one of the largest in Iran. The cave is open from 9 AM to 4 PM, and entry costs 250,000 rials. A taxi from Zanjan will cost around 1,500,000 rials round trip, or you can join a guided tour.

Ghashogh Tappeh just outside town is a quiet hour if you like old graves and carved stones, nobody's ever there.

Shah Neshin, lunch not dinner.

The Rakhtshooy Khaneh (old laundry house) near the bazaar is worth an hour, it's now an anthropology museum and far quieter than the main ones. Also, Fridays are dead for the bazaar, go Saturday instead.
