Cairo residency permit 2026: what paperwork do I need?

Which permit applies to a foreign employee, what documents does it require, and what commonly goes wrong at the Mogamma or passport office? Any recent experience would be useful.

Bring passport photos and photocopies of everything, plus your lease near Al Nasr Rd, since address proof stalls more applications than the medical does.

Address proof tripped me up too, though the lease alone wasn't enough. The Mogamma wanted it stamped by the shahr aqari (real estate registry), which took an extra week. Get that stamp before you queue.

Photocopies need to be certified by your embassy too, plain copies got turned away when I asked around.

The employer usually handles the work permit side, so ask HR which category they're filing under before you worry about paperwork. Mogamma queues are worse early in the week, so try midweek if you can.

HR files it, but the medical test trips people up.

Do people mostly meet through family and friends, or is apps like Tinder actually a thing now? Also wondering if meeting up near the Citadel or downtown is a normal first date or if that's more of a tourist move.

Zamalek or Maadi, coffee first.

Agree, though a ahwa in Heliopolis works just as well if they're based out east.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

fair point, a local ahwa keeps it low key & casual. id just avoid picking anything right on a main road, the noise makes talking hard. shisha spots work too if u want something more relaxed

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

maadi's good but the metro ride back to the east side is long if things go well. coffee on Road 9 works, plenty of quiet spots off the main strip.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

tbh apps are pretty common now, but downtown works fine for a first meet, the Citadel feels a bit touristy.

Downtown works, but skip Tahrir Square itself, too crowded.
