Taxi scam on Al Nasr Rd in Cairo 2026?

Got quoted 300 EGP from a driver on Al Nasr Rd for a trip that maps said should be about 80. He insisted the meter was broken and that was the 'tourist price' for 2026. The broken meter line is classic, but 300 for 80 is steep even by Cairene haggling, so just walk off and flag the next one.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

walking off is the whole trick, they always cave

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Firm no and turning away usually drops their price fast.

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

Agree, 150 is the realistic ceiling there.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Yep, and flagging from the curb never works, they slow down just enough to talk price through the window.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

That's just the standard tourist tax there.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

airport side of the road is worse

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Al Nasr Rd is notorious for this since it feeds the airport corridor. Use Uber or Careem there instead, fares are fixed upfront and you skip the negotiation entirely. 80 EGP sounds right for that stretch.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Careem often surges near the airport road too

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Honestly, the white-taxi app in Egypt is Careem, and Uber works fine too but fewer cars show up after midnight on that stretch.

Cairo residency permit 2026: what paperwork do I need?

Which permit applies to a foreign employee, what documents does it require, and what commonly goes wrong at the Mogamma or passport office? Any recent experience would be useful.

Bring passport photos and photocopies of everything, plus your lease near Al Nasr Rd, since address proof stalls more applications than the medical does.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Address proof tripped me up too, though the lease alone wasn't enough. The Mogamma wanted it stamped by the shahr aqari (real estate registry), which took an extra week. Get that stamp before you queue.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Photocopies need to be certified by your embassy too, plain copies got turned away when I asked around.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

The employer usually handles the work permit side, so ask HR which category they're filing under before you worry about paperwork. Mogamma queues are worse early in the week, so try midweek if you can.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

HR files it, but the medical test trips people up.
