wait, nobody mentioned the zigong dinosaur museum as a quick half day before catching a train. it's literally 20 min from zigong east station, 40 rmb entry, and the fossil hall is world class, like actual full skeletons not just replicas. if you have a morning before your leshan or yibin train, do that instead of sitting in a cafe. and for food, the cold noodles at the food court inside the museum are surprisingly decent, 15 rmb and they do a spicy mala version that'll wake you up for the ride.

also for yibin, when you get off at the bamboo sea shuttle, walk left past the first grove to the old logging path. it's not on any map but locals use it to get to the upper reservoir, takes about 40 min and you get the whole sea to yourself. the main trail is packed with selfie sticks by 10am, that path had maybe three people when i went last november. just bring mosquito spray, the bamboo groves are brutal with bugs near the water.

the leshan tip about weekdays is solid, but honestly the real move is taking the 2am sleeper bus back to zigong after a late dinner in leshan, saves u a hotel night and the bus drops u right at the old town gate. also if ur doing rongxian, the bus from zigong terminal is like 12 rmb and takes an hour, but the 7am one gets u there before the tour groups, and the riverside teahouse near baixi river has the best jasmine tea for 8 rmb, sit there for an hour and just watch the water. the guide missed that the dafo temple there has a hidden staircase behind the main hall that goes up to a rooftop view of the whole valley, most people never find it cause it's behind a curtain.

honestly the guide nailed it but leshan deserves a full day not a half one. i did the buddha + wuyou temple + walked the old town after and still felt rushed. the boat ride is worth the 70 rmb, you get way better photos of the whole cliff face than from the top. also if u go on a weekday the queues are way shorter, weekend mornings are chaos.

one thing they missed: yibin's bamboo sea is actually two sections, the main touristy part and the quieter back trails near xianyu cave. most people skip the cave but it's this cool natural limestone grotto, like 15 min walk past the main groves. bring a flashlight for the dark bits. and the shuttle bus inside is fine but walking the ridge line gives u views the bus misses.

for neijiang, skip the temple if u're short on time, daqian garden is the real gem. the painter's studio is preserved inside and u can see his actual brushes and ink stones, which i thought was way more interesting than another buddhist hall. noodles at lao zhang mian near the garden are better than the ones by the station, trust me.

Booked a room in Zigong last October and the thing I'd flag is the breakfast situation, which the guide touches on but undersells. A lot of mid-range places advertise "breakfast included" and it turns out to be a coupon for a noodle shop next door, which is actually great, since Zigong's morning beef noodle bowls are the real draw anyway. Ask at check-in where the coupon works, because the front desk often forgets to mention it and you lose the value.

On location, everyone defaults to Wuxing Street but I'd look at the streets just south of the Salt Museum, around Shizi Kou, where you get the same walkability with less foot traffic at night. Paid around 180 yuan for a clean mid-range room there, and the old salt merchant lanes are right outside your door.

I've stayed at the Howard Johnson Salt Capital twice and it's fine, but the rooms on the Wuxing Street side get noisy at night, so ask for a higher floor facing away from the market if you book there. One thing the guide doesn't mention is that Zigong has a decent cluster of newer hotels around the Huidong New Area near the high-speed rail station (Zigong Station, not the old one), which is handy if you're coming in on the Chengdu line and don't want to deal with the 20-minute taxi into Ziliujing. Also worth knowing: many smaller hotels in Zigong still don't take foreign credit cards, so bring some cash or use Alipay linked to an international card.

The point I'd add is about timing within the day, not just the season: Zigong's lantern festival at Colorful Lantern World (Caideng Gongyuan) runs roughly from late January into March, and even outside Spring Festival the weekends during that window push Ziliujing rates up noticeably, so a Tuesday arrival can save you real money. Also, if you're coming for the salt history specifically, the Shenhai Well in Da'an is worth a half day and pairs well with the dinosaur museum since they're on the same side of town, so a Da'an base for one night actually makes sense rather than treating it as a day trip from the center.
