Solid plan but there's a few tweaks that make a real difference. The morning market near Taihao that someone mentioned is spot on, those sesame cakes are about 1 yuan each and way better than anything you'd buy at a bakery.

For Day 2, the museum rooftop terrace is real and worth asking about, but I'd add that the museum itself closes for lunch from 12 to 2, so time your visit accordingly. If you show up at 11 you'll feel rushed, better to go right at 9 when it opens.

Dangcheng is the highlight of the trip in my opinion. The bus ride there passes through some nice farmland, and the town itself feels genuinely old, not rebuilt for tourists. Grab some of the dried persimmons they sell near the main gate, about 8 yuan a bag and they last for months.

yeah the itinerary looks good, i've lived here for a few years and it covers the main spots pretty well. one thing i'd add is that dragon lake is nice but the real gem is the little temple on the island in the middle, you have to take a small ferry for like 5 yuan to get there, most tourists skip it. it's quiet and has a cool old bell you can ring.

for day 1 evening, yingbin road is fun but if you want better street food go one street over to renmin road, there's a guy who's been selling lamb skewers there for like 20 years, he's right outside the old department store. the tangyuan on yingbin is fine but a bit sweet for my taste.

dangcheng is worth it but the bus can be a pain, i'd suggest taking the 8am bus to avoid the market crowd. the paper cutting shops are cool but there's also a guy who makes these tiny clay figurines near the main temple, 15 yuan each, my kid loves them.

fwiw the laozhoukou restaurant is great but their lunch rush starts at 1130 and if you show up at noon you'll prob wait 20 minutes. i'd suggest going at 11 or grabbing a seat at the smaller noodle shop across the street instead, they do a mean sesame paste noodles for like 15 yuan.

for day 3 the bus to dangcheng is fine but the return taxi thing is real. i usually take the bus back too, route 8 runs till 6pm and it's 5 yuan. saves the hassle of haggling and you get to see the countryside from the window.

one thing the guide misses is the morning market near taihao mausoleum, it's on the side street just south of the entrance. opens around 7am and has fresh fruit and these little sesame cakes that are perfect for breakfast. grab a few before you go in, the mausoleum grounds don't have much food inside.

If you're heading to Kaifeng, the Iron Pagoda is worth the entry fee but don't skip the small museum at the base. It has a scale model of the original Song Dynasty pagoda that was lost to flooding, and the contrast with the current one is striking. The climb up is narrow and steep, 13 stories of tight spiral stairs, so leave bags at the ticket counter if you can.

For the Henan Museum in Zhengzhou, the free entry with ID is a great deal but the line can snake around the courtyard by 10am on weekends. I go on a weekday around 2pm and walk straight in. The second floor has a hall of ancient musical instruments where they sometimes play recordings of reconstructed bells, it's eerie and beautiful.

On the budget front, 150-300 CNY per person is about right for most trips but the Kaifeng park's 120 yuan entry feels steep for what it is. I prefer just walking the old city walls near the south gate, they're free and you get a better sense of the actual historical layout without the theme park crowds.

I've done the Zhengzhou trip a few times and the Henan Museum is genuinely worth a full afternoon, not just a quick stop. Their collection of Shang dynasty bronzes is one of the best in the country, and the jade burial suit is something you won't see elsewhere. If you go, grab a bowl of huimian noodles at the shop across from the museum's east gate, it's about 15 yuan and hits the spot after walking through all those galleries.

this is a solid list, i've done the kaifeng trip a few times from zhoukou. one thing to add: if you go to kaifeng, skip the main food street near millennium city park and walk a few blocks north to the small lanes off gulou street. there's a stall there that does this insane sesame seed cake with braised pork, costs like 5 yuan and it's way better than the tourist stuff

for luoyang, the longmen grottoes are stunning but it's a lot of walking on uneven stone steps. wear proper shoes, not sandals. i saw someone eat it on the stairs near the big buddha last spring and it was not pretty. also the water bus on the yi river gives a good view of the grottoes from below if your legs need a break

the xuchang suggestion is underrated tbh. it's so close and cheap, you can do the whole thing in a half day and still be back in zhoukou for dinner. the cao wei ancient city is mostly rebuilt but the chunqiu tower has this quiet courtyard garden that feels genuinely old. bring cash for the little tea house inside, they only take yuan

oh and one small thing about the budget tip. the 12306 app works fine but if ur phone number isn't chinese registered it can be a hassle to get verified. just go to the station counter, it's faster than
