yeah the binjiang road tip is spot on but if you go a little further past the main stretch theres a section where old guys fly these massive traditional kites at dusk. some of them are like 3 meters long with little lanterns on them. really pretty to watch and nobody ever mentions that spot
ngl the lizhuang tip is good but theres a better way to do it. take the local ferry from the small dock near hejiangmen instead of the bus, it costs like 5 yuan and drops you right at the old towns back entrance. the ride takes about 40 minutes and you get to see the river up close, way nicer than sitting on a bus
also if youre up for a morning hike, cuiping mountain has a hidden trail that starts behind the zoo. most people just take the main path but the back trail goes through a bamboo grove and comes out at a small pavilion with a killer view of the three rivers meeting. takes about 30 minutes and you prob wont see anyone else up there
The Lizhuang tip is solid but most people miss the wartime architecture inside the temple grounds. Tongji University moved their whole engineering department there during the war and you can still see the original classrooms and lab equipment. It's a strange time capsule moment that doesn't feel like the rest of the town.
If you have an extra day, take the bus from South Station to Changning county for the Shihai Dongxiang geological park. It's about an hour out and looks like someone dropped a bunch of Karst hills into a rice paddy. Entry is 60 yuan and there's barely any tourists compared to the bamboo sea.

Nice breakdown, really covers the bases well. One thing I'd add is that if you're coming for the food scene specifically, the area around Dongpo Road is great for drinking but the real yibin ranmian spots are scattered around the smaller lanes off Beijie in Nanxi. There's a place called Lao Wang Mian that's been running for like 20 years, no sign in English, just a red awning. Bowls are 7 yuan and they're open from 6am until they run out around noon.
For anyone doing the Cuiping Mountain hike, the trail from the back entrance is fine but bring mosquito spray if you're going in summer. I got eaten alive up there last June and the bites lasted a week. Also the tea houses near the top charge double what you'd pay at the bottom, like 25 yuan for a cup of jasmine instead of 12. Better to bring your own thermos.
Been staying in Nanxi for work trips the past couple years and one thing I'd flag is that the hotel prices can jump quite a bit during baijiu expo season in December. Jinjiang Inn that the guide mentions at 250-400 can easily hit 600+ if you don't book a month ahead. I learned that the hard way.
For the Bus Station area, those cheap rooms are fine for a night but the noise from the long-distance buses starting up at 5am is relentless. If you're on a tight budget, the Lucky Star Hotel's back rooms facing the alley are noticeably quieter than the front ones. Just ask when you check in.
One area missing is the old town section near Hejiangmen Gate. It's a bit rough around the edges with older buildings and narrow streets, but there are some great family-run noodle shops that do yibin ranmian for around 8 yuan a bowl. A few guesthouses have opened up there recently, basic places around 120-180 a night, and you're walking distance to the night market on Dongpo Street without the party noise.
I've stayed in both the Nanxi and Cuiping districts and I'd suggest thinking about noise levels when you pick. Nanxi is great for convenience but the traffic on Renmin Road starts early, around 6am, with delivery scooters and buses. Cuiping is noticeably quieter, especially if you get a room facing the mountain side rather than the main street.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the cable car up Cuiping Mountain stops running at 5pm, so if you want to catch sunset from the top you need to hike up. The trail from the back entrance near the Cuiping Youth Hostel takes about 40 minutes and is well lit. I've done it a few times and it's manageable even if you're not a regular hiker.
For the University District, a lot of the cafes listed online close during winter break when students go home. Brew & Code is usually reliable year-round but the coworking space Nomad Co-Living sometimes reduces its hours in January and February. I'd call ahead if you're visiting then.
