ngl the sunday market tip is good but most tourists miss the back row of stalls near the mosque. thats where the old guys sell loose-leaf tea theyve been curing for years, not the tourist-grade stuff. i picked up a bag of osmanthus oolong for 35 yuan once that beat anything in the shops. bring small bills, they dont take wechat pay out there
also if you do the evening stroll on lantern lane, skip the moonbeam teahouse on busy nights and go two doors down to the courtyard place with the wisteria. same jasmine tea for 20 yuan and theres a cat that wanders between tables. quieter and the owner lets you linger without pushing for another order
oh and if ur there on a tuesday morning, the small temple at the end of lantern lane (barely marked, just past the teahouse) has a free tea ceremony at 10am. it's mostly old folks from the neighborhood but they'll hand u a cup and let u sit in the courtyard. really quiet and peaceful before the crowds hit the old town
honestly this guide is solid but they left out one of my favorite spots - the little dumpling place tucked behind the Drum Tower on a side alley. no sign in english, just a red banner with "Wang Ji Jiaozi" in white characters. they do these pan-fried pork and chive dumplings for like 8 yuan a dozen and they're crispy on the bottom, juicy inside. i always grab some before hitting the night market

Solid itinerary, really captures the essence of the place. If you have time on day 3 after the Morning Bazaar, cut through the alley behind the Temple of the White Crane to find Lotus Root Soup Shop. It's just a window with two stools, but their pork and lotus root soup has been simmering since 5am and it's only 8 CNY a bowl. The owner is a quiet lady who will refill your bowl for free if you ask nicely.
One thing about the Riverside Walk is that the best grilled tofu is actually from the second cart past the old bridge, not Auntie Li's. Her stuff is fine but that second cart uses a spicier house-made chili oil that locals line up for starting around 6:30pm. You will know it by the small red flag tied to the awning.
fwiw if you're around on a sunday the City Museum is closed but the ancient town has this free guided walk at 10am that most people miss. the guide is this old guy named Mr. Zhou who grew up in one of the courtyard houses, he tells stories about the temple that aren't in any brochure. i tagged along last year and he pointed out these faded carvings on the east wall that i'd walked past three times without noticing
also for the opera house show, try to get seats in row 8 or 9. the acoustics are weird in the front rows, too much echo from the stage. row 8 is where the sound balances out and you can actually hear the singer's voice over the instruments. i learned that the hard way after sitting in row 3 and missing half the lyrics
that's a really solid itinerary, covers all the bases. one thing i'd add is that if you're at the temple of the white crane on day 3, check out the small side hall to the left of the main courtyard - there's a little old man there who does these incredible papercutting portraits for like 15 yuan, he's been doing it for decades and it's a way better souvenir than the market stuff
