decent writeup, covers the main stuff. one thing missing is the old town on a weekday morning, like 7am, before the tour groups show up. the stone lanes around fuxing square are basically empty except for grandmas doing taichi near the temple gate & a couple vendors setting up rice cake steamers. completely different vibe from midday when its packed. entry to the confucian temple is free before 8:30 too, nobody checks, though the main hall isnt open yet so ur just walking the courtyard.
also for the dragon's back, if ur not up for the full 4.5km there's a shortcut locals use. about 1.2km in there's a side path on the right that cuts up to the lower ridge in maybe 40 min, still gets u the valley view just not the highest point. trailhead is unmarked so ask someone at the bus station, they'll point u.

the Dragon's Back tip about starting before 9 is real. i did it in july and by 11 the ridge was brutal, no shade at all up there. one thing the guide missed: the trail actually splits about 3km in, go left for the viewpoint, right just loops back down through scrub with no view. saw a few people take the wrong one.
also for the noodles, Lao Zhang is great but if you want the same bowl without the queue, there's a tiny spot on the corner of Wenming and Zhongshan, no sign, just a red awning. same 15 yuan, opens 6am. locals call it er jie de mian (second sister's noodles). she closes whenever she runs out so dont roll up at noon expecting anything.

been going to xinxing for years and the one thing every guide skips is the pharmacy situation. if u get the runs from the night market squid (happens) the only reliable place is the big pharmacy on Jiefang Road, near the post office, they stock real rehydration salts not just the sweet drink kind. bring your own meds basically.
on the tea houses, qingyun is the famous one but i actually prefer the smaller place on the second floor above the rice cake stall near the temple. no name, just walk up the wooden stairs. 8 yuan a cup and its mostly neighborhood uncles playing xiangqi, theyll let u watch. quieter than qingyun and the tea is better imo
also nobody mentions the morning market on the east side of town, sets up around 5:30 and gone by 9. fruit, dried mushrooms, live chickens, the whole thing. good for cheap snacks before a hike

One gap though: nobody mentions the Xinxing Wet Market on Fuxing Road, just north of People's Square. It runs 5am to noon and the breakfast stalls inside are better and cheaper than anything on Binjiang Road, you can get a full bowl of doujiang and youtiao for 6 yuan. Head there around 7 if you want to eat with the locals before the tour buses show up.
On the budget side, the 300 to 400 yuan daily figure is realistic but skews high if you skip taxis entirely. I did three days on about 220 a day by walking everywhere downtown and only taking the bus out to Qingyun. The transportation card is worth getting at any convenience store, saves fumbling for coins and works on buses 12 and 15 too.
