guide's missing my favorite breakfast spot tbh - the tofu pudding stall at the corner of Wenhua and Renmin, just past the morning market. It's a little old lady who's been there for decades, 4 RMB for a bowl with soy sauce and chili, silky smooth and totally wakes you up. She's there from 6 to 9 AM, bring exact change cause she doesn't do digital
if you're hitting the BBQ alley, the grilled fish tip from the other reply is solid but i prefer the lamb skewers from the third stall from the entrance with the yellow sign. the guy there adds cumin and a splash of vinegar which sounds weird but it cuts the richness, 3 RMB each and they're slightly charred on the edges. grab a few extra cause they go fast
honestly the guide nails it but i'd add that the claypot rice at Happy Family is even better if you go right when they open at 11am for lunch, the rice crust is extra crispy then. also if you're at the night market on Dongfeng, grab a side of their pickled radish from the old guy two stalls down from Auntie Chen, it's free if you buy a drink and cuts through the grease perfectly. one thing i'd skip is the sugarcane juice cart at Renmin and Jiefang, Mr Li's nice but the one near the bus station on Heping Road uses way fresher cane and it's only 4 RMB

honestly the itinerary is well put together but you're missing the best part of xiaoganzhan which is the early morning wet market on jiefang road. it starts around 6am and wraps up by 9 so it's a tight window but you'll see the real city there. old ladies selling pickled vegetables and fresh river fish straight from the han, plus a guy who makes sesame pancakes in a clay oven for 3 CNY each. grab one on your way to the museum
for day 2 i'd actually start qinglong mountain earlier than 7 if you can. the sunrise from the pagoda at the top is worth the 5am metro ride and the park technically opens at 6 for morning exercisers. there's a group of tai chi people who practice at the base around 6:30 and they'll let you join in if you ask. had a really calm moment doing that last spring
the grand theatre tip is good but check if the xiaoganzhan philharmonic is playing at the cultural center instead. it's a smaller venue on wenhua road, tickets are like 40 CNY and the acoustics are better. the building itself is this brutalist concrete thing from the 80s that looks like a soviet bus station but inside it's gorgeous. my favorite cheap evening in town honestly
the guide's right about the riverside promenade but there's a better spot for sunset - the pedestrian bridge at the end of heping road, about 10 mins past the night market. locals call it the love lock bridge even though the city removed most of the locks a few years back. you get a perfect view of both the old city wall and the new skyline lighting up at the same time, and there's a guy selling roasted chestnuts from a cart at the base for 10 CNY a bag
for the museum, check if they're running the temporary exhibit in the east wing on the second floor. it rotates every 3 months and last time i was there they had this incredible collection of han dynasty burial figurines that were excavated just outside town in 2019. the permanent collection is good but the temp stuff is where the real gems hide
one practical thing nobody mentions - the metro card kiosks at the station only take cash for the deposit (20 CNY) but you can top up with alipay or wechat after that. saves you fumbling for coins if you're arriving with only cards
ngl this is a solid itinerary but you're skipping one of my favorite spots - the old tea market on Fujian Street, just a 5 min walk from Renmin Square. it's not in any guidebook but the vendors let you sample pu'er and oolong for free before you buy, and a bag of decent loose leaf runs like 30-50 CNY
also if you're at qinglong mountain, the vegetarian house is decent but i'd grab the stinky tofu from the old lady with the cart just outside the park gate instead. costs 8 CNY for a skewer and she's been there for like 15 years, way more authentic than the sit-down place
one thing about the metro - line 2 gets packed around 5pm especially near the station, so if you're heading back from the museum around closing time, consider walking 10 mins to the next stop at hongqi road instead. same price, way less crowded, and you pass that bakery with the egg tarts for 4 CNY each
