yeah the museum gift shop tip is solid, i found a little silver bracelet there for 30 yuan that looked way better than the tourist stuff on horqin street. also, if you're into architecture, walk around the old neighborhood behind daqing temple - there's a few crumbling mongolian-style houses with blue and orange trim that nobody bothers photographing, but they're more authentic than the restored stuff. just don't expect signs or maps, it's all dirt paths and stray dogs back there
solid write-up, really captures the place. one thing i'd add is that the Daqing Temple complex has a small tea house in the back courtyard, past the main hall - they serve butter tea and the monk running it will sometimes let you hold a prayer wheel if you ask nicely. it's quiet back there, most tourists miss it and just snap photos of the big statue.
also if you're doing the grassland trip, try to go on a weekday if you can. weekends get packed with tour groups from Shenyang and the herders are way more rushed. i went on a tuesday last june and had the whole yurt to myself for like an hour
Good list. One thing I'd add is that the Tongliao Museum has a small gift shop in the back that sells replica Khorchin silver jewelry and miniature horsehead fiddles for way cheaper than the stalls on Horqin Street. I picked up a little fiddle keychain for 15 yuan there.

Where to stay in Tongliao for a first visit?
tongliao is pretty spread out so depends what u want. train station area is handy if ur arriving late or leaving early but its mostly chains & kfc type stuff, not much local food tbh. i'd go closer to the city center around mingren street / the pedestrian area, tons of small restaurants, bbq skewers, mongolian places & easy to walk around at night. transit isnt great anywhere, buses are slow so u'll probably end up using didi anyway
honestly the neighborhoods around the train station and city center get most of the attention but i'd look at the Horqin district side too, quieter streets but still plenty of little noodle shops and a big market in the mornings. one thing nobody mentions, summer here is short and winter hits hard so check if ur place has heating before u book, some of the cheaper spots near the station dont.
if ur coming in summer the area near xiliao river park is worth a look, quieter than the center but still walkable to food, and the night market along the river picks up around 6pm. ngl the blocks just east of the railway station get pretty dead after dark so id skip staying right there unless ur just crashing before an early train. also worth knowing tongliao addresses are by district not always street numbers so tell ur didi driver the district name too or u might end up miles off
