honestly i'd skip the usual spots and head to the dam area just south of town. the light hits the reservoir at golden hour and you get these crazy reflections off the water. prob only 20 mins by taxi and you'll have the place to yourself

Head to the bend in the Yellow River near the Swan Lake Wetland Park for sunrise, but skip the boardwalk and walk east along the dirt path by the reeds. For sunset, the best view is from the top of the small hill at the Shaanzhou Ancient City ruins, where you can see the river curve with the mountains behind it. It's about a 15-minute taxi from downtown and costs maybe 10 yuan for entry.

if you want something less touristy, try the small temple hill just outside the city near the yellow river bridge. it's a bit of a climb but the sunset hits the river perfectly and almost nobody goes there. also check out the old railway track area west of town, good for golden hour with the mountains in the background

🗺️ Day 1 Overview
Start your trip in the city center around the Sanmenxia Railway Station area. This neighborhood has convenient hotels and easy access to buses. Plan to arrive by 9 AM to maximize your first day.

🏛️ Morning: Museum and Park
Visit the Sanmenxia Museum (No. 1 Heping Road, open 9 AM-5 PM, free admission) for an introduction to local history. Then walk 10 minutes to the nearby People's Park for a relaxing stroll among locals practicing tai chi.

🍜 Lunch: Local Noodles
Head to Laochenghuang Mutton Soup (No. 22 Jianshe Road) for a bowl of yangrou paomo, a local specialty. A hearty bowl costs around 25 RMB and will fuel you for the afternoon.

🌉 Afternoon: Swan Lake Area
Take bus No. 1 from the city center to Swan Lake National Urban Wetland Park (30-minute ride). From November to March, you can see thousands of whooper swans. The park is free and best visited between 2 PM and 4 PM for good light.

🌃 Evening: Night Market
Return to the city center and explore the Sanmenxia Night Market on Heping Road. Try grilled skewers (5-10 RMB each) and fresh fruit drinks. The market is lively from 6 PM to 10 PM.

⛰️ Day 2: Hangu Pass
Take a taxi or bus from the city center to Hangu Pass (about 1 hour, 40 RMB by bus). This ancient fortress dates back to the Qin Dynasty. Spend the morning exploring the ramparts and the museum inside (admission 80 RMB).

🍵 Lunch: Countryside Eats
Near Hangu Pass, stop at a local farmhouse restaurant like Nongjiale (on the main road). Try the stir-fried wild vegetables and braised chicken. A meal for two costs around 60-80 RMB.

🚤 Afternoon: Yellow River Cruise
After lunch, take a 20-minute taxi to the Yellow River Cruise Pier at Sanmenxia Dam. A 1-hour boat ride costs 60 RMB and offers stunning views of the dam and surrounding cliffs. The last cruise departs at 4 PM.

🛌 Day 3: Morning Relaxation
Spend your final morning at Wenfeng Temple (No. 18 Wenfeng Road, free entry), a peaceful Buddhist site with pagodas. It is a 15-minute bus ride from the city center. Arrive by 9 AM to avoid crowds.

🛍️ Late Morning: Shopping
Walk to the nearby Wanfugou Pedestrian Street for souvenirs like local dried persimmons and clay figurines. Shops open around 10 AM. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the asking price.

🚌 Departure: Getting to Station
From the city center, take bus No. 2 or a taxi (15 minutes, 15 RMB) to Sanmenxia South Railway Station for high-speed trains. Allow at least 30 minutes before your train for security checks.

yeah this is a really well thought out plan. one thing i'd tweak is the day 1 museum timing, it's small enough that you can breeze through in 45 minutes and still have time to grab a coffee at the little shop on huashan road before heading to people's park. the morning rush at the noodle place around 11:45 can be brutal, so either go at 11 or push it to 1pm when the line dies down. for the swan lake bus, route 1 drops you at the south gate but the north entrance off shanxian road has way less foot traffic and a nicer path along the water if you don't mind walking an extra 5 minutes. the cruise is the highlight tbh, the cliffs on the far side have these old boatman caves carved into the rock that the guide barely mentions.

i've done this exact route a couple times and it holds up well. one thing that's easy to miss is the small observation platform at the yellow river dam itself, not just the cruise. you can walk right up to the edge for free if you go through the side gate near the parking lot, the view of the water crashing through is better than from the boat honestly. for the museum near wenfeng temple that the other person mentioned, it's called the sanmenxia buddhist stone carving hall and it's only open 9-11am on weekdays, so check before you go. the lingbao persimmons tip is solid, grab a bag from the old lady at the north end of wanfugou near the fountain, she's been there forever and her prices are fair without haggling

nice planning, this covers the main spots well. if you're up for a little detour on day 1, the shanxian county earth building complex is about 40 minutes west of the city by bus. it's a cluster of traditional underground courtyard homes called di keng yuan, some still lived in. entrance is 30 yuan and it's way less crowded than the swan lake area. for the yangrou paomo at laochenghuang, ask them to add a bit of their house-made chili oil, it gives the broth a nice smoky kick that most tourists don't know about. the swan lake boardwalk is good year round but if you go in summer, bring mosquito repellent, the water attracts them.
