the guide's spot on about haixian lou but if you want a more local vibe try the seafood hotpot place on dongfang road just past the old market. they do a live shrimp pot where you dip them in vinegar and ginger yourself, runs about 80-100 per person and the broth is way better than the tourist spots.
for a sweet treat i'd skip sugar house and grab the tangyuan from the old lady at the corner of yuhai road and jiefang, she sets up around 4pm and they're 6 rmb for a bowl of black sesame ones. way better than the cake stuff imo.
also the guide didn't mention the fried rice cakes at the stall behind rui'an middle school, open 11am to 2pm only and they sell out fast. 10 rmb gets you a plate with egg and pickled mustard greens, best lunch in town.
i've been to the beef noodle stall near the bus station a bunch of times and it's consistent, but if you walk two blocks east to the corner of renmin and wenhua there's a guy who does beef offal soup with rice noodles for 18 rmb. he's there from 6am to noon and the broth is darker and richer, been simmering since 4am he told me.
the tea house mention is good but qingxin gets busy on weekends, i prefer the smaller place on huayuan road just past the post office. they do a cheaper set for 20 rmb with the same local green tea and you can sit by the window watching the old street, much more relaxed vibe.
agree with the guide on the night market, the grilled squid at stall 7 is legit but go earlier around 7pm before the crowd hits, they run out of the bigger skewers by 9. also the fried yellow croaker with pickled veg is a must, i had it at a random spot on yuhai road near the old temple and it was 35 rmb for a whole fish, way cheaper than the seafood places on binjiang.
one thing the guide missed is the cold jelly noodles at the cart by the north gate of yuhai park, only there on weekends from 10am to 2pm. 8 rmb a bowl with chili oil and crushed peanuts, perfect for a hot day and beats the stinky tofu line imo
Shanghai hidden gems beyond the Bund?
honestly skip the bund crowds and head to the former french concession around wukang road. grab a coffee at some random lane spot, the whole area has these old lane houses that feel way more real than the skyline. also check out the rock bund art museum near the south bund, it's in this old industrial building with killer views and barely any tourists last time i was there. if u want food, go to tianzifang but skip the main alleys and wander into the side lanes, you'll find a tiny dumpling place that's like 15 yuan for 10 pieces
if you're around on a weekend morning, hit up the antique market on dongtai road before it fully gentrifies. it's mostly gone now tbh but there's still a few stalls tucked near the intersection with liuhe road, you'll find old propaganda posters and weird mao-era knickknacks for like 20 kuai. also the shanghai natural history museum in jing'an is underrated, the building itself is this wild spiral shape and the dinosaur skeletons are legit impressive, plus it's like 30 yuan entry. for a quiet evening walk i'd do the suzhou creek path near the north bund but go west from the waibaidu bridge, past the old post office building, there's a stretch where the lights hit the water just right and nobody's around
yeah if you want something totally different check out the long museum (long museum west bund) it's this massive space with rotating contemporary art, way less crowded than the power station of art. also walk the suzhou creek trail near the north bund, it's kinda rough around the edges but you get these weird views of old factories mixed with new towers
