The guide mentions the seafood hotpot but misses one of my favorite spots. There's a family-run place called "Yuan's Kitchen" tucked away on a side street off Wenhua Road, behind the big KFC. No English sign, just red characters on a white board. Their steamed scallops with glass noodles are incredible, about 80 RMB for a big plate.
For the peanut cake, I'd actually disagree about the pastry house version being the best. The ones from the farmers market are good, but the bakery on Dongjing Road near the hospital makes them with a slightly thicker crust that stays crunchy for days. They sell out by 10 AM most mornings though.
seconding the farmers market tip, that's the real deal. also worth knowing the grilled squid stalls on yanshan street vary a lot - the one closest to the intersection with minzu road has the best cumin blend, the guy's been there for like 15 years. he does these whole squid for 15 rmb that are way better than the skewers
for the beer street in beidaihe, go early like 5pm if you want a table with a view. after 7 it's packed with tour groups and the service gets slow. the grilled oyster stall at the very end by the water is worth the walk, they do a garlic butter version that's not on most menus
oh man the jianbing at yanshan street night market is legit but tbh the best one is actually from a little cart near the east gate of beidaihe park, opens around 6pm and they add this crispy fried dough strip inside that makes it so much better. only 10 rmb too
for the seafood hotpot thing, i'd skip the big tourist spots on haibin road and go to a place called xiaohai seafood on jianshe street instead. it's a tiny hole in the wall but the broth is way richer and they give u way more clams for like 120 rmb per person. no sea view but the food's better
also if you're around on a sunday morning theres a farmers market on gangcheng street where old ladies sell homemade peanut cakes for like 12 rmb a box. way fresher than the pastry house ones and they're still warm sometimes

yeah the guide's pretty solid overall. one thing i'd mention is that if you're doing the beidaihe beach morning, the water can be chilly even in june, so don't expect a warm swim. also for food near shanhaiguan, there's a small place called lao ma lamb soup just off old street, it's like 15 yuan a bowl and way better than the tourist traps, just look for the red sign with faded writing.
the guide's right about booking train tickets early, i learned that the hard way last august when i showed up at the station and everything was sold out for the next 4 hours. ended up taking a slow bus back to beijing, which was not fun. if you're doing the shanhaiguan great wall section, bring water from the shops outside the gate, they charge double once you're inside and it's a long walk with no shade. also, the beidaihe museum is small but worth the free entry, especially the old photos of western diplomats lounging on the beach in the 1920s, gives you a different perspective on the place
good tips in the guide, the bus 34 from the station is reliable but ngl it gets packed in summer, i usually just grab a taxi for 30 yuan and save the hassle. for day 2, if you have extra time after shanhaiguan, walk east along the wall from old dragon's head toward the sea, there's a stretch where you can see the waves hitting the base and it's way more atmospheric than the crowded main section.
one thing the guide skips is the evening scene at beidaihe's ping shui qiao night market, it's a 10 minute walk from tiger rock and has grilled squid and cold beer for like 20 yuan, great for a casual dinner after day 1. also for day 3, the nandaihe wetland park is a solid alternative to the amusement park, free entry and you can spot egrets if you go early, just bring mosquito repellent.
