i've been eating at yong shang fu for special occasions for years and it's worth every yuan, the view of riyue lake at sunset is unreal. one thing the guide doesn't mention is that they do a lunch set for about 250 rmb that's almost identical to the dinner tasting menu, way easier on the wallet. also for a really local experience, hit up the morning market on nian guang street near the old bund around 8am, you'll find vendors selling fresh seafood straight off the boats and old ladies making handmade tangyuan right on the sidewalk, grab a bag of live shrimp for like 20 rmb and ask any nearby restaurant to steam them for you, they'll charge maybe 10 rmb for the service

One thing I'd add is to grab a bowl of kaofu (braised gluten puffs) from any hole-in-the-wall near the Drum Tower, it's a local breakfast staple that tourists usually skip. The version at the small stall on the corner of Yongfeng Road and Xianxue Street costs about 6 RMB and pairs perfectly with their soy milk.
the guide nails the seafood but skips one of my favorite cheap eats, the stinky tofu at the chenghuang miao night market is fine but the real move is getting it from the lady with the cart on yongfeng road right by the drum tower around 5pm, she fries it extra crispy and gives you a heap of pickled cabbage on top for like 5 rmb. also if you want the best nian gao, skip the tourist spots and go to the tiny family place on ximen street called lao zhang's, they do a version with pickled vegetables and shredded pork that's way better than what you get at most restaurants, about 12 rmb a plate
What's the nightlife like in Ningbo?
laowaitan is cool for a wander but the real hidden gem is in the old city near gulou. there's a tiny cocktail bar called the liquor library with no sign, just a black door. they do incredible local ingredient infusions, like plum wine or osmanthus. 60-80 kuai a drink and the bartender actually remembers what you like if you go back
depends what vibe you're after tbh. for a more local scene check out the bars along laowaitan, the old foreign concession area by the river - craft beer spots like beer lady or the hidden speakeasy called hope & sesame are solid. if you want to dance without tourist crowds, head to 7pm in the eastern new town, it's a club that mostly draws locals and plays house/techno, cover is like 50-100 kuai depending on the night
honestly the bar street near tianyi square is pretty fun for bar hopping, lots of small places with live music and cheap drinks. if you're into something more lowkey there's a rooftop bar called the rooftop that has a great view of the city skyline, kinda hidden but worth finding
