fwiw the hidden jade waterfall is great but theres another spot locals go to called the old quarry pools about 15 min past the waterfall trailhead. its not marked on any map but if you follow the stream past the cascade for another 10 minutes youll find these deep green swimming holes with way fewer people. just watch out for the slippery rocks near the edge
also for the art district the red bean cafe is solid but theres a smaller gallery two doors down called space 8 that has this rotating exhibit of local photographers. they do print sales for like 50 yuan each and the guy running it will tell you the story behind every shot if you ask
I've done that sunset cruise a few times and it's consistently good, but spring for the later departure at 6:30 PM if you're here in summer. The earlier one still has bright sun, while the later slot catches the real color change over the mangroves. Just bring a light jacket, the breeze picks up once you're out on the water.
For anyone visiting the Old Fort, go right when it opens at 9 AM. The museum is small but has some interesting shipwreck artifacts, and you'll have the rooftop views to yourself before the tour groups roll in around 10. The stairs up to the lookout are uneven in places, so watch your step.
the waterfall hike is worth the drive but heads up the trail can get muddy after rain so check the weather first. i slipped last time and ended up with a bruised knee lol. also if you go on a weekend it gets busy by 10am so start early if you want the pool to yourself
Nangandao nightlife for a short trip?
tbh for a short trip i'd just base yourself around the new pedestrian bridge at night. theres a cluster of three places right there that cover all bases. one does proper cocktails, the next is a dive with pool tables and cheap beer, and the third is a tiny dumpling spot that stays open until the last person leaves. the bridge itself is lit up at night and you can stand there with a can from the convenience store without anyone bothering you. way less walking than bouncing between minzu and the old train station area.
Most people gravitate toward the riverside stretch near the old market, and for a short trip that's honestly your best bet. The bars along Minzu Street have a decent mix of craft beer spots and louder places with live music, and you can hop between five or six without ever needing a cab. If you're after something a bit more low-key, the little courtyard behind the Guangming Cinema has two tiny cocktail bars that are easy to miss but rarely packed.
honestly if you're only here for a few days skip the riverside chaos and head up to the alley behind the old train station. there's a rooftop place called the Lookout that does decent local brews and has a killer view of the city lights at night, way less touristy than minzu street. also the noodle shop on the corner there stays open till 2am and their spicy beef soup is perfect after a couple drinks. just be ready to walk up four flights of stairs, no elevator.
