yeah the cable car to longtan is worth it but if you're up for a hike there's a trail that starts behind the temple and goes up to this old watchtower. takes about 40 minutes and the view from the top is way better than the cable car platform. just watch your step in winter, the steps get icy.
also for the museum, they have a small section on the russian railway workers who lived here in the early 1900s. not many people know about it but the old photos of the station and the church are pretty cool. its in the back corner of the second floor, easy to miss.
the rime ice thing is spot on, just dont bother going if the temp is above -10c or the frost wont stick. i check the weather the night before and only go if its gonna be properly cold.

the hot pot tip is good but honestly the real move is going to the muslim quarter near the north market for lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. there's a place called xibei on heping road that does this cumin lamb noodle soup for like 25 yuan and it's the best thing on a cold night. also if you're at the museum check out the old photos of the russian quarter from the 1920s, there's a whole block of those buildings still standing on songjiang road that nobody talks about but they're gorgeous in the snow
heading to jilin in 4 months, what's the nightlife like?
since you're coming in may the weather should be nice enough for some outdoor spots. there's a small beer garden near beishan park called yi dian yuan that's popular with locals, they do decent grilled skewers and cheap draft beer, gets lively around 8pm. for something different, head to the basement level of wanda plaza on jiefang da lu, there's a hidden speakeasy called 1918 that plays jazz and makes solid cocktails, not your usual club scene but good for a quieter night. if you want dancing, the crowd at mix club on zhongshan jie is younger and the music leans edm, cover is usually 50-80 yuan
the other replies covered the main spots but i'll add a few that don't show up on most lists. there's a nanjing-style bar on heping street called lao men dong, they do a mean plum wine cocktail and the decor is like an old alleyway, feels super authentic. for late night eats after drinking, hit up the street food stalls near jilin railway station's east exit, the lamb skewers there are better than anywhere in the city center and they stay open til 2am. also if you're near beihua university, there's a cluster of tiny karaoke rooms called liang ge ren that rent by the hour and sell cheap beer, good for a messy night with a small group
honestly the nightlife here is pretty lowkey compared to bigger cities, but there's a solid strip of bars and clubs along Songjiang Zhong Lu near the river. if you're into craft beer, check out Jilin Beer House on Jiangwan Street, they've got a rotating selection of local brews and it's chill enough to hang out for a few hours. for clubs, Oops Club on Jilin Street gets busy on weekends but it's tiny, so expect to be packed in tight. if you want something more laid back, try the rooftop bar at the Shangri-La, the view of the river at night is actually worth the pricier drinks.
