Xijie Bar in Gejiu 2026, is it worth a visit?
Back room, earlier side of 9.
corner table past the bar, gets you out of the smoke
does the back room get loud once the front fills up? trying to figure out if its actually quieter or just less crowded
went on a saturday last spring and it was mostly local beer with a few basic mixed drinks, expect 30 to 50 yuan and skip friday when tour groups roll through
Second this, Thursday is quieter than Saturday.
Fairly accurate, though the place fills up later on weekends.
Good to know about Friday, though I'd say the mixed drinks are more limited than basic.
I'd add that the mixed drinks get watered down once it's busy, so stick to bottles if you're there late. Prices creep up a bit on weekend evenings too. Did the tour group thing happen earlier in the night or later?
tbh the bar snacks are the real reason to go, prices for those were pretty low too
30 to 50 sounds right for the bottles but the snacks run cheaper than that. did the tour groups show up before or after 10 when u were there? trying to figure out the quiet window
did the tour group thing happen before or after 10? trying to work out the quiet window on other nights too
ask about the upstairs room, quieter and they pour stronger than downstairs
Working remotely from Gejiu cafes in 2026?
the cafe wifi in gejiu is mostly fine for email & browsing but i wouldn't bank on it for video calls all day. bigger places near the city center tend to have steadier connections than the smaller milk tea shops. most cafes open around 9 or 10 & close by 10pm, so overlapping a european morning means working their late afternoon or evening, which is doable if u plan around it
agreed on the video call thing. ngl a backup sim is worth it, China Mobile 4G around Jinhu lu held up better than cafe wifi for me. also worth asking if they have a wired spot in back
Most spots around Renmin Lu shut nearer 9, so scout a 24-hour teahouse as your late-night fallback.
Worth adding that upload speed is the real bottleneck, not download. Ask to run a quick speedtest before you commit to a spot, and keep your phone hotspot as backup. A few places near Gejiu Lake have decent fiber if you look around.
yeah the 9 to 10 window is real, plan calls for 3 to 5pm your time
smaller milk tea spots also throttle hard when busy so grab a seat early & test speed before ordering
order first then test, staff get weird about table campers
fair point on the video calls. one thing i'd add is that lunch hour around 12 to 2 gets rough, lots of students camping tables so plan a longer break then & start your calls after
that late afternoon overlap is the tricky part since vietnamese-style spots here often close earlier than the big chains. i'd test a couple around 3 or 4pm before committing, since staff turnover then can leave u without a working router
Bigger places near the central plaza hold up better, but ask about their backup power since summer outages still knock routers offline.
