fwiw the guide's pretty accurate but they missed the morning noodles at Li's on Renmin Road just past the night market entrance. it's this tiny place with no sign, just a guy pulling noodles in the window, and they do this dry-tossed noodle with chili oil and crushed peanuts that's better than the small pot version imo. 8 yuan a bowl and they're open 6am to 10am only, cash only
also the department store food court is fine but if you want real BBQ head to the alley behind the bus station around 8pm, there's a guy with a cart who does lamb skewers with this cumin and sichuan pepper mix that's way better than the stuff at the market. 3 yuan a skewer and he stays open til midnight most nights
honestly this guide is pretty solid, the small pot rice noodles at Old Street are legit but they really do sell out by 11am on weekends so show up early. one thing i'd add is the grilled fish stall near the bus station around 6pm, they use local river fish with this chili lime sauce that's incredible, only 15 yuan a skewer. also if you're at the night market grab the roasted chestnuts from the old guy at the far end, they're sweeter than the ones closer to the entrance and he gives u extra if u chat him up in yunnanese.
solid guide, the small pot rice noodles at old street are the real deal and yeah they're gone by 11am sharp. one thing nobody's mentioned yet is the fried milk at the night market, this stall near the middle does these golden cubes of sweetened condensed milk batter, 10 yuan for a little basket, they're super addictive and best when fresh out of the oil. also if you're up for a short walk, the taro cake at the corner of Heping and Renmin around 4pm is worth tracking down, it's a steamer cart with this dense savory cake topped with fried shallots, 5 yuan a slice and they only make about 30 a day

Spend the morning exploring the Gejiu Mining Museum at 123 Jiefang Road (open 9 AM to 5 PM, 30 RMB). After lunch, walk to the nearby Baohua Temple on Baohua Hill for panoramic views. End the day with a stroll along the Jinhu Lake promenade.

nice writeup, covers the main spots pretty well. one thing i'd add is that the yunnan tin museum is small but has some wild old photos showing gejiu when it was basically a mini shanghai in the mountains, all those art deco buildings from the 30s. a lot of them are still standing but crumbling, you can see them on beijing road if you walk a block off renmin. also for the grand canyon trip, bring your own water and snacks cuz theres nothing up there and the vendors at the entrance are overpriced. the hike down into the canyon is steep but worth it, there's a tiny stream at the bottom that's ice cold even in summer
one spot the guide skips that's worth your time is the old yunnan-french railway station on the south edge of town, just past the bus depot. it's mostly abandoned now but the colonial architecture is still intact, yellow stucco and green shutters, feels like stepping into a different century. takes maybe 15 minutes to walk around and there's usually nobody there. also for the night market, the grilled tofu vendors near the wenhua road entrance are my go-to, they serve it with that spicy dipping powder and it's like 5 rmb for a dozen pieces, way better than the skewers in my opinion
The guide is solid, especially the mining museum and the night market on Wenhua Road. One thing I'd add is that the Jinhu Lake promenade is much nicer at sunset when the light hits the old industrial buildings on the hillside. If you're up for a short detour, walk up to the abandoned smelter near the lake's east end, it's a bit eerie but gives you a real sense of Gejiu's scale back in the day. Also, the 8 RMB noodles at Lao Gejiu Noodle House are a steal, but they run out by 9 AM so get there early.
