Best northwestern food in Gejiu: Luong Son Quan?
No idea about Luong Son Quan specifically, but Tay Bac spots around Jinhu lu fill up fast on Saturdays so call ahead.
weekend walk ins there are usually fine before 6 but after that ur looking at 40 min waits
Lau hai san, order it early.
order it before 7 or they run out
Calling ahead is sound advice, though I'd book for 7pm rather than 8, since that kitchen winds down early.
Go before 5:30, the fish hotpot.
The fish hotpot's better with a side of lon cap nach, and the place is tucked down a lane off Jinhu lu so budget ten min to find it.
Five sharp works too, kitchen turns over quicker.
5 works but the lane off the main road floods after rain so wear shoes u dont care about
their cha ca la vong is the sleeper pick
Nhà hàng Sơn Đông in Gejiu, worth a stop in 2026?
The name's Vietnamese but the kitchen up there cooks Yunnan home style, so don't expect pho. Get the red braised pork with rice, that's what people actually come for. March evenings still drop cold, walk it only if you're fine with steep lanes.
Red braised pork is right, though ask for the leaner cut since the default is mostly fat.
honestly that name gets repeated a lot but I'd temper expectations, its a solid neighborhood spot not a destination. March is right around the time the cherry blossoms at Jinshan come out so the area gets busy. the cold chicken with chili oil and the mushroom hotpot are what I'd get. walkable-ish from the tin district but its uphill and sweaty.
Cold chicken sells out by noon.
idk that vietnamese name for a place in gejiu is odd, most spots round the tin district go by chinese names. the old tin area sits up on the hill so walking anywhere means stairs, grab a cab for a few yuan instead. order the stir fried noodles & skip anything fried
Fair point on the name, but honestly a cab from the tin district runs like 8 yuan and saves you the stair climb.
make it 10 after dark, meters spike on that hill
yeah night rates kick in around 10pm so timing matters. also the app meters round up on the hill roads, cash avoids that. drivers sometimes refuse the last stretch if its raining
Agreed on the cab, though the stir fried noodles there lean a bit oily so ask for less oil.
That name's just a signboard thing, kitchen's pure Gejiu.
