Staying longer in Gejiu: which visa permit in 2026?

Do I need to switch to a residence permit at the exit-entry bureau, and what documents do they actually ask for? Also what usually goes wrong with the application, like needing a local sponsor or health check?

The exit-entry bureau on Jinhu Rd wants a local sponsor letter and health check first, which is where most applications stall.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

yeah sponsor letter is the real bottleneck, they want the sponsor's hukou copy & ID too not just a signed note. health check at the CDC clinic near the bus station, blood test & chest xray, results take 2 days so book early.

arrow_drop_up 11 arrow_drop_down

Good point on the hukou copy, forgot that part. fwiw they also want passport photos and a copy of ur entry stamp, and the sponsor has to show up in person at the window, not just send papers.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

photos need white background, they rejected mine

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

tbh I'd also bring a spare copy of everything, they kept one set at the window and sent me back to print more.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Sponsor also needs proof of address, not just hukou.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Landlord's lease copy works too.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Health check must be under 6 months old

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agreed, and the sponsor letter needs to name the exact permit type and duration, vague wording gets bounced at the window. Also check whether your nationality even qualifies for a longer stay permit, some consulates list it online.

Honestly, tourist visa extensions cap around 30 days, so ask about a private residence permit instead.

Nhà hàng Sơn Đông in Gejiu, worth a stop in 2026?

arrow_drop_up 6 arrow_drop_down

The name's Vietnamese but the kitchen up there cooks Yunnan home style, so don't expect pho. Get the red braised pork with rice, that's what people actually come for. March evenings still drop cold, walk it only if you're fine with steep lanes.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

honestly that name gets repeated a lot but I'd temper expectations, its a solid neighborhood spot not a destination. March is right around the time the cherry blossoms at Jinshan come out so the area gets busy. the cold chicken with chili oil and the mushroom hotpot are what I'd get. walkable-ish from the tin district but its uphill and sweaty.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

idk that vietnamese name for a place in gejiu is odd, most spots round the tin district go by chinese names. the old tin area sits up on the hill so walking anywhere means stairs, grab a cab for a few yuan instead. order the stir fried noodles & skip anything fried

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Fair point on the name, but honestly a cab from the tin district runs like 8 yuan and saves you the stair climb.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

make it 10 after dark, meters spike on that hill

arrow_drop_up 9 arrow_drop_down

Agreed on the cab, though the stir fried noodles there lean a bit oily so ask for less oil.

That name's just a signboard thing, kitchen's pure Gejiu.
