best coffee near Tiệm caffe MidWay in Gejiu 2026?
I stopped by MidWay on a trip through Gejiu last spring. The coffee is fine, solid Vietnamese-style phin, but nothing you'd walk across town for. If you want a proper espresso, head toward the older streets near the lake where a couple of small spots roast their own. Weekday opening is around 7:30, though they're slow to unlock the doors some mornings.
Second this, the queue is the giveaway.
Queue peaks 8 to 8:30 when the office crowd hits, so go before 7:45 or after 9.
The lake spots you're thinking of are on Jinhu East Road, and one roasts Yunnan beans from Pu'er, worth the ten minute walk.
Pu'er beans, yes, but ask for the light roast.
that 7:30 thing tracks but weekends they dont bother before 9 and the phin drips slow so budget 15 min
honestly u prob want cash since their card machine flakes out half the time, and the 15 min drip estimate is generous.
Doors actually open nearer 8, staff arrive late.
Opening time is closer to 8 than 7:30 in my experience, and the sidewalk seating out front is the real reason to linger.
also worth knowing the phin there is robusta-heavy so it hits harder than the arabica spots by the lake
robusta-heavy phin, so yeah. expect a harder hit.
Hot spring hotels in Gejiu: safe late-night areas 2026
the 10pm arrival is the real issue, not the walking. last buses from the train station wind down around then, so sort a ride before u get off. if ur hotel is up in the hot spring cluster, ask them to send a car and confirm the price in writing, legit ones do this for late guests. old mining streets are fine by day but quiet & poorly lit at night, so no detours there
ask them to text the plate number too
yeah and screenshot the chat, some drivers "forget" the agreed fare once ur bags are in teh trunk.
WeChat Pay records beat screenshots.
Agreed, and old mining streets lack lighting entirely on side lanes.
Old mining streets, even the main drag, no streetlights past 9
Stick to the Jianshe Road area near the hot spring hotels; the old tin district gets patchy after dark, so grab a taxi from Gejiu station rather than walking.
A taxi booked through the hotel is usually safer than hailing one outside the station at that hour.
fair point, though I'd say sort your ride before you even board, station taxi touts get pushy that late.
Jianshe Road works because it's flat and lit, but tell the hotel your train time so they hold a driver past 10pm.
