Working remotely from Gejiu bars in 2026
For afternoon laptop work I'd look at the cafe side of Jinhu Lu rather than bar streets, quieter and the staff won't mind you nursing one drink for 3 hours. Mobile data is the safer bet anyway, China Unicom signal held up fine when I was around. Gejiu pretty much shuts down by 11, so plan your client overlap for early morning your side instead of late night.
Xijie gets busy after 9pm, go early.
yeah, but wifi dies when it fills up
true, though the quiet window is really mid afternoon til maybe 6, after that the after work crowd trickles in. i'd grab a seat by the wall outlets if u can, they're limited.
Right, and the drift starts closer to 7 once the dinner crowd rolls in. Afternoon is dead until about 5, so you've got a clean window. Bring your own hotspot as backup regardless.
Hotspot yes, but top up at a China Mobile counter first, not online.
Even before 9 the good corner tables near the door get claimed by the mahjong crowd around 6.
Agreed, but the bars don't really fill till later anyway, so an early afternoon start is safe.
Earlier still, more like 4 if u want the window seats.
the sweet spot is like 2 to 5, by 6 the tables outside get taken and it's all smoke and shouting.
hot spring hotels in Gejiu 2026, where to book?
The hot spring places I know of sit out toward Tangdian and along the road to Jianshui rather than in the city centre. Expect somewhere in the 300 to 600 yuan range for a room with a private tub, more on weekends. Buses from Kunming's East Coach Station run several times a day, roughly four hours, and you'll want to book the morning ones since the last stretch is slow. The tin museum is easy to reach once you're in town.
Private tub rooms at those roadside places often come with a meal included, so ask when booking.
no train from kunming, bus only, about 4hrs
Agree, but book a day ahead, seats sell out.
yeah and the morning departures go first, by mid afternoon you're stuck with the slow ones. try the little ticket windows outside too, they sometimes have seats the app shows as gone. bring cash for teh fare.
spring break week is when they really vanish, so grab seats the day they open rather than waiting
Roughly right, though Mengzi is another option if buses are full.
Four hours is optimistic if traffic is bad, had closer to five once. Also the bus drops you at the main station so factor a taxi to wherever you're staying. Book online a few days out, not day of.
