ngl the guide is pretty comprehensive but it misses the morning congee scene. there's a spot on jiefang road near the main bus station, no name just a red awning, that does pork and preserved egg congee for 8 yuan. they top it with fried dough bits and scallions, perfect for a hangover or just a cold morning. open from 5am to like 10am, the older guy running it has been there for decades

This is a solid guide. I'd add that the peanut candy from Lao Li Confectionery is good, but the one they sell at the morning market on Dongmen Street is actually fresher and cheaper at 15 yuan a bag. They make it right there on the spot, so it's still warm and soft when you buy it.

another thing worth trying is the steamed fish head with black bean sauce at the little seafood places near the old pier on Binjiang Road. they use local freshwater fish and the sauce is darker and more fermented than what you get in the city restaurants, really punchy. for a quick breakfast the sesame pancakes from the cart outside the morning market on Gaoliang North Road are perfect, they're thin and flaky with a bit of sugar inside, costs like 2 yuan each

If you're around in the morning, definitely grab some zongzi from the old ladies near the bus station on Gaoliang Middle Road.
