🏞️ Where to Start
Baoshan is a great base for exploring western Yunnan, with day trips that range from volcanic hot springs to ancient towns. Most destinations are within a 1 to 2 hour drive or bus ride from the city center. Start early, around 8 a.m., to make the most of your day, and check the weather forecast as mountain roads can be foggy in winter.

♨️ Hot Springs at Longling
About 60 kilometers south of Baoshan, Longling County is famous for its natural hot springs, especially at Banglazhang Hot Spring Resort. A day pass costs around 120 yuan and includes access to several outdoor pools with temperatures ranging from 40 to 70 degrees Celsius. The drive takes about 1.5 hours by car, or you can take a local bus from Baoshan's South Bus Station. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful forest setting.

🏯 Ancient Town of Heqing
Heqing Ancient Town, about 90 kilometers north of Baoshan, offers a quieter alternative to the more famous Dali Old Town. The town is known for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, with cobblestone streets and traditional courtyard houses. Admission is free, and you can spend a few hours wandering the alleys and visiting the local temple. Buses from Baoshan's North Bus Station run every hour and cost about 30 yuan one way; the journey takes roughly 2 hours.

🌋 Tengchong Volcano Park
Tengchong, about 160 kilometers west of Baoshan, is home to the famous Volcano Geothermal Park, where you can see dormant volcanic cones and hike up to the crater rim. The park entrance fee is 50 yuan, and you can also take a hot air balloon ride for an additional 200 yuan to get a bird's-eye view. The drive takes about 2.5 hours, so leave early and plan to spend at least 3 hours at the park. Combine this with a visit to the nearby Beihai Wetland for a full day of outdoor exploration.

🛶 Erhai Lake by Boat
While Erhai Lake is technically in Dali, it's still doable as a day trip from Baoshan if you're willing to start early and return late. The drive to Dali takes about 2 hours on the expressway, and you can rent a boat at Caicun Village for around 150 yuan per hour. The lake is stunning in the morning when the water is calm and the mountains are reflected in the surface. After your boat ride, grab a quick lunch at one of the lakeside restaurants before heading back to Baoshan.

🚌 Getting Around
For most day trips, renting a car with a driver is the most convenient option, costing around 400 to 600 yuan per day depending on distance. Public buses are cheaper but slower and less flexible, so they work best for destinations like Heqing or Longling. If you're comfortable with it, you can also rent a scooter in Baoshan for about 80 yuan per day, but be cautious on mountain roads. Always confirm the return bus schedule before you leave, as services can be infrequent in the afternoon.

💰 Budget Tips
A typical day trip from Baoshan will cost between 150 and 300 yuan per person, including transport, entrance fees, and meals. To save money, bring your own snacks and water, as tourist sites often have inflated prices. Many attractions offer student discounts with a valid ID, so carry your student card if you have one. Also, consider visiting on weekdays, as some places like Tengchong Volcano Park have lower entrance fees on non-holiday days.

🌤️ Best Time to Go
The best time for day trips from Baoshan is from March to May and September to November, when the weather is mild and dry. Summer (June to August) brings heavy rains, which can make mountain roads slippery and reduce visibility at viewpoints. Winter is cold but clear, making it a good time for hot springs and sunny days at Erhai Lake. Always check the local forecast before setting out, and pack layers as temperatures can drop quickly in the mountains.

honestly the Heqing tip is solid, I did that one last spring and it was way less touristy than Dali. one thing the guide doesnt mention is the tofu stall right by the temple entrance, old lady makes it fresh with a chili oil thatll wake u up, costs like 5 yuan. also if ur going to Tengchong, skip the balloon and just hike up, the view from the crater is just as good and u save 200. for Erhai, check if the wind is up before u rent a boat, that lake gets choppy fast and u'll end up soaked.

good list, pretty accurate for what's out there. one thing i'd throw in is the Gaoligong Mountain botanical trail if you're into quieter hikes, it's about an hour east of Baoshan, entrance is like 60 yuan and the canopy walkway gives u a totally different vibe than the volcano park, less crowded too. also for Longling, if you're not set on the resort, the village hot pools are free and locals swear by them for the same mineral water, just bring ur own towel. one heads up on the Erhai boat thing, the wind picks up hard by 11am, so if u go, do it first thing or skip it. honestly the bus schedules from the North Station to Heqing are reliable but the last one back leaves around 4:30pm, so don't miss it or you're stuck paying for a taxi that'll cost double the trip.

solid list. one thing i'd add is the coffee scene in Baoshan itself before you head out, there's a small roastery on Taishan Road called Yunshan that does a killer local arabica, grab a cup to go for the drive, costs like 15 yuan. also for Longling, most people hit the main resort but the free outdoor pools near the village entrance are basically the same water, just less polished, locals use those and it's a chill spot if you want to skip the 120 yuan ticket. for Heqing, the bus drops you at the main gate but walk west along the old city wall for about ten minutes, there's a watchtower you can climb for free, best view of the rooftops at sunset before you catch the last bus back.

🏙️ Where to Start
Baoshan is a sprawling prefecture in western Yunnan, and most travelers base themselves in Longyang District, the political and transport hub. The city's main bus station and airport are here, making it the default choice for a first night. If you are heading to Tengchong's volcanoes or Gaoligongshan's forests, you might prefer a district closer to those sights. This guide breaks down five key areas with typical 2026 rates in USD.

🏨 Longyang District
Longyang suits first-timers and transit travelers who want easy access to buses and trains. Budget hotels run $15 to $30 per night, midrange $35 to $60, and high-end $80 to $150. The Baoshan Hotel at 88 Yongchang Road offers reliable midrange comfort with a central location, while the Wenhua Hotel on Longquan Road is a solid budget pick near the night market. Book via Trip.com or Meituan for the best rates, especially two weeks ahead during holidays.

🌋 Tengchong District
Tengchong is all about hot springs and volcanic scenery, ideal for nature lovers and couples. Budget guesthouses cost $20 to $35, midrange $45 to $80, and luxury hot spring resorts $120 to $250. The Tengchong Rehai Hot Spring Resort at 1 Rehai Road lets you soak in natural pools, while the Heshun Ancient Town Inn offers charming courtyard stays from $50. Book directly with resorts for package deals, and reserve early for October's National Day week.

🏞️ Gaoligongshan Area
This area is for hikers and birdwatchers who want to be close to the mountains. Budget lodges are $18 to $30, midrange $40 to $70, and eco-lodges $90 to $160. The Gaoligongshan Nature Reserve Lodge provides simple rooms with guided treks, and the Baihualing Birdwatching Inn is a favorite among ornithologists. Use local booking sites like Qunar for better availability, and arrange transport in advance since buses are infrequent.

🏘️ Shidian County
Shidian is a quieter county town that appeals to budget travelers and those exploring rural Yunnan. Rates are low: budget $12 to $25, midrange $30 to $50, and the few upscale options $60 to $90. The Shidian Hotel on Dianyang Road is the most comfortable midrange choice, while the Yaoquan Inn offers basic but clean rooms near the bus station. Book on Meituan or call ahead, as online listings are limited.

🏮 Heshun Ancient Town
Heshun is a historic town within Tengchong, perfect for culture seekers and photographers. Budget inns start at $25 to $40, midrange $50 to $90, and boutique courtyard hotels $100 to $200. The Heshun Courtyard Hotel at 5 Shuidui Lane blends traditional architecture with modern comforts, and the Yuzhou Inn offers budget rooms with mountain views. Book through Trip.com or Agoda, and avoid weekends if you want lower rates.

💡 Booking Tips
For the best prices, compare Trip.com, Meituan, and Agoda, as local platforms often have discounts. Book at least two weeks ahead for peak seasons (Chinese New Year, October holidays) and avoid arriving without a reservation during those times. Many smaller hotels do not list online, so calling directly can sometimes secure a room at a lower rate.

🚌 Getting Around
Baoshan's districts are connected by long-distance buses from Longyang's main bus station, with trips to Tengchong taking about 2.5 hours and costing around $8. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Didi are available in urban areas but scarce in rural spots. For flexibility, consider hiring a car with a driver for about $60 per day.

⏰ 24-Hour Decision
If you only have 24 hours to decide, pick Longyang District for convenience and transport links, or Heshun Ancient Town if you want a memorable cultural experience. Both offer a range of hotels and easy access to Baoshan's highlights.

Nice to see Shidian and Gaoligongshan get their own sections, most people just write Baoshan off as a transit stop and miss that the whole prefecture has completely different vibes depending on where you land.

One angle the guide skips is food as a way to pick your base. Longyang has the most reliable mix, but if you care about eating well, Tengchong's the winner. The ersi (饵丝) there is a different thing entirely from what you get in Longyang, thinner rice noodles in a clear pork broth, and the daijiazhai area near the old town does it best for around 12 yuan a bowl. Heshun has good food too but it's priced for tourists, expect to pay double for the same dish inside the scenic area gates.

Also worth knowing, if you're basing in Longyang and want a day trip without committing to a full move, the wet market off Baoyou Lu in the morning is where the actual local breakfast happens. Cheap, busy, done by 10am.

arrow_drop_up 25 arrow_drop_down

this is a nice rundown, the district by district split is way more useful than the generic "baoshan hotels" lists you see elsewhere.

one thing i'd add for gaoligongshan, the baihualing area basically shuts down for birding in the wet months. peak season is really nov to march, and the inns there fill up with tour groups months out. i showed up in july once thinking i'd wing it and half the guesthouses were closed and the trails were pure mud. if birds are the goal, book by october for a winter trip.

also nobody ever mentions the coffee. baoshan grows a lot of it and the small farms around lujiang坝 do tastings, cheap and worth a half day if you're stuck in longyang waiting on a bus.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

handy writeup. one thing i'd flag is the altitude thing, nobody mentions it. longyang sits around 1650m so most people are fine, but tengchong is a bit higher and if you go up gaoligongshan you're climbing fast. i got a mild headache the first night in tengchong and wished someone had told me to take it easy on day one.

on hotels, the Wenhua in longyang is decent but ask for a room away from the street side. the night market noise runs late and the windows are thin. paid 180 yuan last spring, so the $25 range checks out.

also for heshun, cash still helps. a couple of the smaller courtyard places wanted wechat pay only and my foreign card wouldn't link, had to sort it at an ATM near the old gate.
