Hungarian food?

Question

Since the Gay Hussar closed, I've been looking for Hungarian food and cakes in London. I know of The Rosemary Organic, but are there any others?

barbaraschreier · Answer

fwiw if you're up for a bit of a trek, the Hungarian Pastry Shop in Seven Sisters is worth knowing about. it's not a restaurant, more a little bakery counter, but they do proper kürtőskalács and somlói galuska on weekends. also, the chef from Gay Hussar did some pop-ups at the French House in Soho a while back, not sure if they still do but worth keeping an eye on their insta

jennyjuergens · Answer

honestly not much around since Gay Hussar shut, which is a shame. there's a place called Budapest Budapest near Liverpool Street that does some decent goulash and lángos, not amazing but scratches the itch. for cakes specifically, Patisserie Valerie on Old Compton Street sometimes has a dobos torte but it's hit or miss, best to call ahead

karstaorlowski · Answer

the hungarian centre on mansion park road in acton does a cafe that's open some weekends, proper goulash and palacsinta, not a fancy place but it's run by actual hungarians. also check the deli counter at lidl in wood green, sounds odd but they get imported paprika sausages and pickled things from eastern europe sometimes

violamerkl · Answer

A bit off the beaten path, but the Bosporus Cafe in South Kensington is run by a Hungarian family and they do a solid chicken paprikash and goulash soup during the week. It's mostly Turkish on the menu but the owner's wife makes the Hungarian stuff from her grandmother's recipes. For cakes, the deli counter at Taste of Hungary on Chatsworth Road in Clapton has proper dobos torte and rigo jancsi on Saturdays, they also sell frozen lángos dough if you want to fry your own.

juliaschoeler · Answer

if you're after the cakes specifically, there's a place called Kova Patisserie in Soho that's japanese-hungarian fusion, they do a really good dobos torte and krémes, the owner trained in budapest. not cheap, around 6-7 quid a slice, but consistent quality. also for something more casual, the hungarian food truck at broadway market on saturdays does lángos with proper tejföl and cheese, they're usually there near the london fields end around 11-4
