**🍛 Tirunelveli Halwa Trail** Tirunelveli is famous for its wheat halwa, and the best place to try it is at Iruttu Kadai (Dark Shop) near the Tirunelveli Junction. The shop opens around 6 PM and sells out within hours, so arrive early. A small box costs about ₹100. Another iconic spot is Shankar Halwa Stall on South Bazaar Street, open from 7 AM to 9 PM, where you can watch the halwa being made in large iron pans. **🍽️ Classic Meals and Thalis** For a traditional South Indian meal, head to Hotel Aryaas on Trivandrum Road, which serves unlimited thalis for ₹150 during lunch hours (12 PM to 3 PM). The thali includes rice, sambar, rasam, poriyal, kootu, and payasam. Another reliable option is Hotel Ramanas on Madurai Road, known for its banana leaf meals at ₹120, available from 11 AM to 4 PM. **🌶️ Spicy Non-Veg Delights** Tirunelveli's non-veg scene shines at Hotel Selvam on North Bazaar Street, where the chicken Chettinad and mutton kuzhambu are local favorites. A plate of chicken biryani costs around ₹180, and they are open from 11 AM to 11 PM. For a quick bite, try the fish fry at Thoondil Mess near Palayamkottai bus stand, priced at ₹100 per piece, served fresh from 5 PM to 10 PM. **🥞 Street Breakfast Spots** Start your morning with idli and dosa at the roadside stalls near Tirunelveli Town Railway Station. A plate of two idlis with sambar and chutney costs just ₹20, and the stalls operate from 6 AM to 10 AM. For something different, try the appam with coconut milk at Amma Appam Stall on Swami Nellaiappar High Road, open from 6:30 AM to 11 AM, where a serving is ₹30. **🍮 Sweet Shops and Snacks** Beyond halwa, Tirunelveli has excellent sweet shops like Sri Krishna Sweets on Bazaar Street, open from 8 AM to 9 PM. Their badam halwa and Mysore pak are popular, with prices starting at ₹200 per 250 grams. For evening snacks, try the bonda and bajji at Sathya Snacks near Vannarpettai, open from 4 PM to 8 PM, where a plate costs ₹30. **🥤 Local Drinks and Coolers** To beat the heat, grab a glass of jigarthanda at Murugan Jigarthanda Stall on South Bazaar Street, open from 10 AM to 10 PM. A large glass costs ₹40 and is made with almond gum, sarsaparilla syrup, and ice cream. Another local favorite is buttermilk (neer moru) sold at small stalls near the bus stand for ₹10, available from 8 AM to 6 PM. **🛒 Markets and Food Streets** The best area to explore street food is around the Tirunelveli Junction market, especially on Sundays when vendors set up from 4 PM to 10 PM. You will find everything from sundal (₹20) to corn on the cob (₹30). For a more organized experience, visit the food court at Palayamkottai's VOC Ground during the annual harvest festival in January, where dozens of stalls offer local specialties. **💡 Practical Eating Tips** Most restaurants in Tirunelveli are vegetarian, so look for 'pure veg' signs if that is your preference. Carry cash, as many street stalls do not accept digital payments. Lunch hours are typically 12 PM to 3 PM, and dinner from 7 PM to 10 PM. Tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill is appreciated.
