**🍛 Start with Kozhikode Biryani** Calicut is famous for its Malabar biryani, and the best place to start is at Paragon Restaurant on Kannur Road, near the railway station. A plate of their chicken biryani costs around ₹250-300 and is served with raita and pickle. For a more budget-friendly option, try Salkara Restaurant on Mavoor Road, where a mutton biryani is about ₹200. Both places are open for lunch and dinner, typically from 11 AM to 11 PM. **🐟 Seafood at the Harbor** For fresh seafood, head to the Calicut beach area, especially around the South Beach and the fishing harbor. The Fisherman's Wharf near Beach Road offers grilled fish and prawn dishes starting at ₹350. For a local experience, visit the small stalls near the pier that serve fried fish (around ₹100-150) from 4 PM to 9 PM. Don't miss the karimeen (pearl spot) fry and the spicy prawn curry. **🥞 Street Food Snacks** Calicut's street food scene is vibrant, especially around SM Street (Sweetmeat Street) and the Mavoor Road junction. Try the iconic Calicut halwa at Sankaran Bakery on SM Street, where a piece costs about ₹30. Also look for the crispy banana chips fried fresh at shops like Kumari Chips on Court Road, selling for ₹80 per 250 grams. Evening stalls near the beach serve hot bondas and pazham pori (banana fritters) for ₹10-20 each. **🍽️ Traditional Sadya Meals** A traditional Kerala sadya is a must-try, and in Calicut, the best place is the Kerala House near the Collectorate. They serve a full vegetarian sadya on a banana leaf for around ₹150-200, available from 12 PM to 3 PM. For a more elaborate feast, book at least a day ahead at Sree Annapoorna near Mavoor Road, where the sadya includes over 20 dishes and costs about ₹300. During Onam, many local hotels offer special sadya, so check dates. **☕ Coffee and Tea Breaks** Calicut has a strong coffee culture, and the Indian Coffee House on Bank Road is a classic spot for a strong filter coffee at ₹20. For a more modern vibe, try the Cafe Coffee Day outlet on Mavoor Road, where a cappuccino is around ₹120. Also, don't miss the local tea stalls near the bus stand that serve Sulaimani tea for ₹10, perfect with a plate of samosas. **🍮 Sweet Treats and Desserts** No food tour of Calicut is complete without trying the famous Kozhikode halwa, available at many sweet shops. The best is at Sankaran Bakery on SM Street, where you can buy it by weight (₹400 per kg). Another local favorite is the banana halwa at Kumari Chips on Court Road, priced at ₹350 per kg. For a cold treat, try the fruit salad with ice cream at Rahul Bakery on Mavoor Road for ₹80. **🌙 Late-Night Eats** Calicut has several late-night food options, especially around the railway station and Mavoor Road. The night stall at the corner of SM Street and Bank Road serves hot parottas and beef fry until 1 AM, with a plate costing around ₹100. For a quick bite, the 24-hour tea shop near the bus stand offers sandwiches and tea for under ₹50. Many restaurants like Paragon stay open until midnight, so you won't go hungry. **💡 Practical Food Tips** When eating out in Calicut, carry cash as many small stalls don't accept cards. The best time for street food is after 5 PM when the stalls set up, and avoid the monsoon months (June-August) if you want to explore outdoor food spots. Tipping is not customary, but rounding up the bill is appreciated. Also, be mindful of spice levels and ask for less spicy if needed.
