**🎉 Winter Cultural Festivals** January and February bring Urumqi's Winter Cultural Festival, with ice sculptures in People's Park and traditional Uyghur music performances at the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar. The festival usually runs from late December to mid-February, and entry to most outdoor displays is free. Dress in heavy layers, as temperatures often drop below -15°C (5°F). **🌷 Spring Equinox Celebrations** Nowruz, the Persian New Year, falls around March 21 and is widely celebrated by Urumqi's Uyghur, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz communities. Head to the Erdaoqiao Grand Bazaar for folk dances, tightrope walking, and feasts featuring hand-pulled noodles and lamb kebabs. Book hotel rooms at least two weeks ahead, as domestic tourism spikes during this period. **🌸 April Blossom Festivals** In mid-to-late April, the Tianshan Wild Fruit Forest in Urumqi County hosts a Blossom Festival with guided hikes among wild apricot and apple trees. Tours depart from the city's Nanmen Metro Station (Line 1) at 9:00 AM, and tickets cost around 120 CNY including transport. The event is family-friendly, but paths can be muddy, so wear sturdy shoes. **🎶 Summer Music and Dance** June through August features the Xinjiang International Folk Dance Festival, with free outdoor performances at Nanhu Square every Friday and Saturday at 8:00 PM. The Grand Bazaar also hosts nightly muqam concerts (traditional Uyghur classical music) for 80 to 150 CNY. Expect large crowds, so arrive early to secure a good spot. **🍇 Grape and Melon Harvest** August and September mark the Grape Festival in Turpan, about 180 km from Urumqi, but the city's own Shuimogou District holds a smaller Melon and Fruit Fair at the Shuimogou Park. Local vendors sell fresh Hami melons, grapes, and dried fruits from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This is a great time to try Uyghur ice cream and fruit preserves. **🏮 Autumn Moon and National Day** The Mid-Autumn Festival (around September 25 in 2026) and National Day (October 1) create a week-long holiday. Urumqi's Hongshan Park and People's Park light up with lantern displays, and the Xinjiang Museum offers free mooncake-making workshops. Book train tickets and hotels at least a month in advance, as this is the busiest travel week of the year. **❄️ Ice and Snow Festival** From late December through February, the Silk Road Ski Resort and Nanshan Ski Field host the Ice and Snow Festival, with night skiing, ice sculpture competitions, and hot spring retreats. A day pass at Silk Road costs about 300 CNY, including equipment rental. Shuttle buses leave from the Urumqi Railway Station at 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM. **🕌 Lesser-Known Local Events** For a quieter experience, visit the Uyghur Meshrep gatherings in the Erdaoqiao community every second Saturday of the month. These informal music and dance parties often take place in local courtyards and are free to join. Also check the Xinjiang Library's monthly cultural lectures on Uyghur history, usually held on the first Sunday at 3:00 PM.
