honestly the airport bus is underrated if you're heading to people's square area, it drops you right at the main square and the walk to the metro from there is like 5 minutes. the bus drivers are grumpy as hell but they'll tell u which stop to get off if u show them your hotel name in chinese. also worth knowing the 51 bus runs a bit later than the guide says, i've caught it past 10pm before but don't count on it
the metro is prob your best bet for most people though, just watch out for the transfer at erdaoqiao if you're going further south, that station can be a maze. i've seen tourists go in circles there for a solid 10 minutes
another thing about the metro is that the card machines only take cash, not card, and they don't give change for anything over 20 yuan. so if you're planning to use it keep some small bills handy. also the airport station is one of the nicer ones in the system, it's clean and well signed in english and uyghur which is not the case for every stop further in. if you're heading to the area around xinjiang university the metro is way better than a taxi because the roads get jammed up on beijing road after 5pm
