**🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes** Meicheng is famous for its hand-pulled noodles, especially the beef noodle soup at Lao Zhang Noodle House (45 Zhongshan Road, open 7 AM to 9 PM, bowls from 15 RMB). Another local favorite is the savory scallion pancake, found at street stalls throughout the old town, usually priced around 5 RMB. For a hearty meal, try the braised pork belly at Chen's Family Restaurant (88 Renmin Avenue, open 11 AM to 10 PM, mains 30-50 RMB). **🏮 Old Town Street Food** The narrow alleys of Meicheng's Old Town are packed with street food stalls, particularly along Fuxing Lane and nearby Mingqing Street. You'll find vendors selling stinky tofu (8 RMB), fried dumplings (10 RMB for six), and sweet rice cakes (5 RMB) from early morning until late evening. Most stalls operate from 8 AM to 8 PM, but some stay open until midnight on weekends. Bring small cash, as many stalls don't accept digital payments. **🥟 Best Breakfast Spots** Start your day like a local with a bowl of congee and youtiao at Wang's Breakfast Stall (12 Xinhua Road, open 6 AM to 10 AM, set meal 8 RMB). For something more substantial, head to Meicheng Morning Market on Huancheng West Road, where you can get freshly steamed buns (2 RMB each) and soy milk (3 RMB). Another popular option is Li's Dumpling House (67 Dongfeng Street, open 6:30 AM to 11 AM), known for its shrimp dumplings (12 RMB per basket). **🍽️ Sit-Down Restaurants** For a comfortable meal, try the Meicheng Roast Duck Restaurant (101 Binjiang Road, open 11 AM to 2 PM and 5 PM to 9 PM, half duck 68 RMB). The elegant Garden Courtyard (23 West Lake Road, open 10 AM to 9:30 PM) serves classic Huaiyang cuisine with mains from 40 to 80 RMB. If you're craving spicy food, Sichuan House (56 Jiefang Road, open 11 AM to 10 PM) offers mapo tofu and kung pao chicken for around 35 RMB per dish. **🍢 Late-Night Eats** When the sun goes down, Meicheng's night market on Changjiang Road comes alive with barbecue skewers, grilled squid, and spicy hot pot. The market runs from 6 PM to 2 AM, and most skewers cost between 3 and 10 RMB. For a sit-down late-night meal, try Night Owl Noodles (89 Changjiang Road, open until 3 AM), where a bowl of spicy beef noodles costs 18 RMB. Another favorite is Uncle Liu's BBQ (34 Renmin Avenue, open 7 PM to 1 AM), known for its lamb skewers (5 RMB each). **🍰 Sweet Treats and Desserts** Meicheng has a growing dessert scene, with Sweet Corner Bakery (78 Zhongshan Road, open 9 AM to 9 PM) offering egg tarts (6 RMB) and mango pomelo sago (15 RMB). For traditional sweets, visit Old Town Confectionery (15 Fuxing Lane, open 8 AM to 8 PM), which sells sesame balls (4 RMB) and red bean cakes (5 RMB). In the summer, look for street vendors selling shaved ice with fresh fruit (10 RMB) near the Confucius Temple. **💡 Food Tips and Etiquette** Most restaurants in Meicheng do not expect tips, and service charges are rare. It's common to share dishes family-style, so order a few plates to share rather than individual portions. If you have dietary restrictions, learn a few phrases like "wo bu chi la" (I don't eat spicy) or "wo chi su" (I eat vegetarian). Also, peak lunch hours are from 12 PM to 1 PM, so arrive early or after 1:30 PM to avoid long waits. **🚌 Getting Around for Food** Meicheng's city center is compact and walkable, but you can also use the local bus system (2 RMB per ride) or ride-hailing apps like Didi to reach food spots. The Old Town and night market areas are best explored on foot, as many alleys are too narrow for cars. If you're visiting multiple neighborhoods, consider renting a bike for about 20 RMB per day. Most food streets are within a 15-minute walk of the main bus terminal on Zhongshan Road.
