🏯 Explore Ancient Meicheng
Start at the Meicheng Ancient Town, a well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty settlement with stone-paved streets and traditional Huizhou architecture. The town is free to enter, but individual attractions like the Meicheng Yamen (magistrate's office) charge 50 yuan. Opening hours are 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and the best time to visit is early morning to avoid crowds.

⛰️ Hike to Meicheng's Scenic Spots
The Meicheng section of the Qiandao Lake scenic area offers trails with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding hills. A popular route starts at the Meicheng Pier and climbs to the Meifeng Observation Deck, about a 40-minute hike. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes, as some paths are steep and uneven.

🚣 Cruise on Qiandao Lake
Boat tours from Meicheng Pier take you around Qiandao Lake, known for its clear water and over 1,000 islands. Standard cruises last 2 hours and cost around 120 yuan per person, with departures at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM. For a quieter experience, book a private sampan at sunset.

🍜 Taste Local Flavors
Meicheng is famous for its fish dishes, especially Qiandao Lake bighead carp cooked in a rich broth. Head to Old Street Restaurant (address: 123 Ancient Town Street) for a hearty meal; a whole fish serves two for about 150 yuan. Also try the local rice wine and bamboo shoots, available at small family-run eateries along the main lane.

🎎 Join Cultural Workshops
The Meicheng Cultural Center offers hands-on workshops in traditional crafts like paper-cutting and ink brush painting. Sessions run daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and cost 80 yuan, including materials. Reservations are recommended during holidays, as groups are limited to 10 people.

🚲 Cycle Through Countryside
Rent a bike from Meicheng Bike Rental (near the town entrance) for 30 yuan per day and explore the rural lanes around the lake. A favorite route is the 15-kilometer loop to Xiajiang Village, passing tea fields and ancient bridges. The terrain is mostly flat, making it suitable for casual riders.

πŸŒ™ Enjoy Evening Entertainment
After dark, Meicheng's ancient town lights up with lanterns, creating a romantic atmosphere. The Night Market on Binhu Road opens at 6:00 PM and sells snacks, souvenirs, and local crafts until 10:00 PM. For a unique experience, catch a traditional puppet show at the Meicheng Theater, held every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM.

🏨 Where to Stay
For immersion, stay in a guesthouse inside the ancient town, such as Meicheng Inn (from 300 yuan per night), which offers courtyard rooms. If you prefer modern comforts, the Qiandao Lake Resort (from 600 yuan) is a 10-minute drive away and has lake views. Book ahead for weekends and holidays, as rooms fill up quickly.

good writeup, saving this for when my cousin visits next month. one thing i'd add about the workshops, the cultural center also does a short tea ceremony session on weekday afternoons that isnt on their signboard, just ask at the front desk. its cheaper than the paper cutting one and the woman running it actually explains the local qiandao leaf stuff instead of just pouring.

as for the fish, old street restaurant is fine but tbh i prefer the tiny place two lanes over from the night market, no english menu but the carp hotpot is roughly 100 for two and the broth is less salty.

arrow_drop_up 20 arrow_drop_down

appreciate the detail on the workshops, thats the kind of thing blogs never list. one angle nobody mentioned is the early morning fish market down by the pier, roughly 5:30 to 7am, where the bighead carp come in fresh. its not a tourist thing at all, just local vendors and restaurant buyers, but if u ask nicely they'll sell you a fish and some old lady nearby will cook it for like 20 yuan. honestly better than any restaurant in town and u get to see the lake wake up before the crowds show.

solid writeup. one thing i'd add is the ferry timing from Meicheng Pier isnt as fixed as it sounds, the 2pm one got cancelled when i went in october becuase of wind and we had to wait for a rebooked slot the next morning. also if u go for the Meifeng hike do it before 8am, the trail gets zero shade after that and the stone steps hold heat like crazy. locals i met said spring is teh best window before the plum rains hit in june.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Arrival and Orientation
Meicheng's compact center makes it easy to navigate on foot, but you'll want to get your bearings first. Start at the Meicheng Visitor Center (123 Ancient Street, open 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM) for a free map and English-speaking staff. From the high-speed rail station, take bus 5 (15 minutes, 2 yuan) or a taxi (about 20 yuan) to the old town. Drop your bags at your hotel and head out for a gentle stroll along the canal to shake off travel fatigue.

🏯 Day 1 Morning: Old Town
Begin at the iconic Meicheng Gate (opens 8:00 AM, 30 yuan) and climb the tower for panoramic views. Then wander through the Ming-era lanes, stopping at the Meicheng Museum (free, closed Mondays) to see local artifacts. Around 10:30 AM, grab a freshly steamed bun from Auntie Li's stall (5 yuan) near the Confucian Temple. Allow 2 hours to explore the core area before lunch.

🍜 Day 1 Afternoon: Food and Crafts
For lunch, try the family-run Old Street Noodle House (56 Ancient Street, open 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, 15 to 25 yuan per bowl). Afterward, visit the Meicheng Embroidery Workshop (78 Silk Lane, open 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM) for demonstrations and hands-on classes (50 yuan). Then walk 10 minutes to the Riverside Tea House for a pot of local green tea (20 yuan) and people-watching. This cluster keeps you within a 15-minute walk of the old town center.

πŸŒƒ Day 1 Evening: Canal Lights
As dusk falls, the canal comes alive with lanterns and reflections. Take a 30-minute boat ride (40 yuan, departures every 20 minutes until 9:00 PM) from the Old Dock. Dinner options include the Night Market (open 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM) with skewers, dumplings, and rice wine for under 50 yuan. End with a stroll along Lovers' Bridge, which offers the best photo spot after dark.

⛰️ Day 2 Morning: West Hills
Catch bus 12 from the old town stop (20 minutes, 2 yuan) to the West Hills Scenic Area (entrance 60 yuan, open 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM). Hike the 3-kilometer trail to the summit for views over the entire valley, which takes about 1.5 hours at a moderate pace. Bring water and snacks, as the only vendor is at the trailhead. On clear days, you can see the Meicheng skyline from the top.

🍲 Day 2 Afternoon: Local Flavors
Return to town by 1:00 PM and head to the Farmers' Market (West Street, open until 6:00 PM) for fresh produce and street food. Try the stinky tofu (10 yuan) and sweet rice cakes (5 yuan) from stalls near the entrance. For a sit-down meal, the Riverside Restaurant (89 Canal Road, open 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM) serves hearty braised pork and river fish for 40 to 60 yuan per person. After lunch, explore the nearby Meicheng Library (free, open 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM) for a quiet break.

🎭 Day 2 Evening: Cultural Show
Book tickets for the Meicheng Impressions show at the Grand Theater (123 Culture Road, 7:30 PM, tickets from 80 yuan). The 90-minute performance features traditional music, dance, and acrobatics. Arrive 30 minutes early to find your seat and enjoy the pre-show tea service. After the show, night owls can visit the Jazz Corner bar (45 Night Street, open until 1:00 AM) for live music and local craft beer (30 yuan).

🚲 Day 3 Morning: Countryside Ride
Rent a bike from Green Cycle (10 Ancient Street, 20 yuan per day, open 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM) and pedal 8 kilometers to the Meicheng Rice Terraces. The flat route follows the canal and takes about 40 minutes each way. Along the way, stop at the Waterwheel Village (free entry) to see traditional irrigation methods. Back in town by noon, return your bike and grab a quick lunch at the Dumpling House (12 North Street, 20 yuan for a plate of 12).

πŸ›οΈ Day 3 Afternoon: Shopping and Departure
Spend your final hours shopping for souvenirs on Ancient Street. Recommended stops include the Silk Shop (34 Ancient Street) for scarves (50 to 150 yuan) and the Tea Merchant (67 Ancient Street) for locally grown green tea (30 yuan per 100 grams). If you're departing by high-speed rail, allow 45 minutes to reach the station via bus 5 or a taxi (20 yuan). The visitor center offers luggage storage (10 yuan per bag) if you need it.

been to Meicheng twice and one thing this guide gets right that most miss is the library. quietest spot in town and the reading room upstairs has old local newspapers going back decades, fun to flip through on a rainy afternoon.

for the Day 3 ride though, skip Green Cycle and walk 5 min past the visitor center to the shop next to the Waterwheel Village turnoff, they rent for 15 a day and the bikes actually have working brakes. Green Cycle's fleet is rough.

also fwiw the visitor center luggage storage fills up by mid morning on weekends, so if you're leaving late in the day drop your bag early or ask the tea merchant on Ancient Street, they'll hold it for free if you buy something small.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

good writeup, the day 1 evening section is the part most guides skip entirely. one thing id add on the boat: the last few departures around 8:40 get way less crowded than the sunset rush, same lanterns, half the people. if u want the Lovers Bridge shot without 20 phones in frame, hang back and take the second to last boat.

for food, skip the Night Market dumplings and go to the little stall on the corner of Silk Lane and Canal Road, the woman there does hand-pulled noodles till she runs out, usually around 9. no sign, just follow the steam. cheaper than the noodle house too.

also the visitor center map is fine but the free one at the Confucian Temple gate is better, it actually marks the alley shortcuts which save u a lot of backtracking between the museum and the embroidery workshop

That Day 2 pairing of market then library is smart, most people crash after the West Hills hike and waste the afternoon. One thing I'd adjust: the Farmers' Market vendors on West Street mostly pack up by 4:30 even though the sign says 6, so don't leave it too late if the stinky tofu is the goal. Also for the cultural show, the cheaper 80 yuan seats at the Grand Theater are on the far side with a pillar partly blocking the stage, worth paying a bit more for the mid rows if you care about sightlines. Good call on the embroidery back room tip too, that's the real Meicheng.
