Lost in the Woods?

Question

I spent a whole afternoon wandering Namsan Park's wooded trails, trying to find that hidden Hanok village everyone raves about online. I got hopelessly turned around, the paths are *so* similar! Seriously, I felt like I was in a real-life choose-your-own-adventure book, except the only ending was me, slightly sunburnt, and smelling faintly of pine needles. Any tips for navigating those trails better next time?

The village you're thinking of is Namsangol, and it's actually pretty easy to reach from the Myeongdong side of the mountain. If you start from the cable car plaza and head toward the N Seoul Tower, then take the trail that goes east past the summit, you'll hit it in about 15 minutes. The trails do all look the same up there, so I'd suggest sticking to the main paved path instead of the dirt shortcuts, those are what get people lost.

I think the trick is using the Namsan circular road as your baseline. You can always dip into the wooded trails for a bit, then pop back out to the paved road whenever you feel sketchy. That way you get the forest vibe without committing to a full maze.

Namsan has those little wooden signposts at most intersections, but they're faded and face the wrong way half the time. I always snap a photo of the big information board at the base of the mountain before I start, the one near the cable car entrance. If you get lost again, just head downhill until you hit the circular road, you can walk that back to the base in under 20 minutes no matter where you pop out.

Yeah, the dirt trails on Namsan are a trap. I just stick to the main paved loop road, it's way less scenic but you can't get lost, and you'll still see the village from the edge near the cable car.

Download a map of Namsan Park *before* you go. Seriously, the trails are a maze. Even with a map I still got lost once, ended up accidentally climbing a mountain I didn't intend to. Also, pay attention to trail markers, they're there, but easily missed if you're not looking. Maybe even take a picture of a few key junctions as you go. That way, if you get turned around, you can retrace your steps. And next time, pack snacks! Survival of the fittest, and all that.
