**🍤 Must-Try Local Dishes** Start with matapa, a rich stew of cassava leaves, peanuts, and coconut milk, often served with prawns or fish. Another staple is xima, a maize meal porridge that accompanies most meals, and you'll find it everywhere from street stalls to family tables. Seafood is the star here, especially grilled prawns (camarão) and crab from the nearby coast. Don't miss the chance to try fresh fish like carapau or serra, usually grilled with lemon and garlic. **🍽️ Top Restaurants in Beira** For a sit-down meal with ocean views, head to Restaurante Costa do Sol (Av. da Marginal, near Praia Nova), where grilled prawns cost around 800-1200 MZN. In the city center, Restaurante Aquila (Rua Major Serpa Pinto) offers a mix of Portuguese and Mozambican dishes, with mains from 600 MZN. Another favorite is Restaurante Beira Mar (Av. das FPLM), known for its seafood platter and friendly service. Expect to pay 1000-1500 MZN for a full meal with drinks. **🌮 Street Food and Markets** The Mercado do Maquinino (on Av. do Trabalho) is the best place to sample local snacks like chamuças (samosas) and badjia (fried bean cakes) for just 20-50 MZN each. In the late afternoon, vendors near the Praça do Município sell grilled corn and cassava chips. For a quick bite, try the rissóis (shrimp-filled pastries) from stalls along Rua da Beira. Prices are low, but bring small change and be prepared to haggle politely. **🦐 Seafood Specialties** Beira is famous for its prawns, and you can find them grilled, fried, or in coconut curry at places like Restaurante Marisqueira (Av. da Marginal). A kilo of fresh prawns at the fish market (Mercado de Peixe) costs around 500-700 MZN, and nearby stalls will grill them for you for a small fee. Crab is another highlight, especially during the dry season (May to October). Try the crab curry at Restaurante O Pescador (Rua Vasco da Gama) for a true taste of the region. **☕ Cafes and Breakfast Spots** Start your day with a pastel de nata and a bica (espresso) at Café Central (Rua Conselheiro Ennes), a remnant of Portuguese influence. For a heartier breakfast, head to Padaria Nova (Av. 25 de Setembro) for fresh bread, cheese, and grilled sandwiches, open from 6:30 AM. The Café do Rio (Av. da Marginal) offers a full English-style breakfast for around 400 MZN. Most cafes open early and close by 6 PM. **🌙 Evening Dining and Bars** As the sun sets, the atmosphere shifts to the waterfront, where Restaurante Costa do Sol becomes a lively spot for dinner and drinks. For a more local vibe, try Bar do Zé (Rua da Argélia), which serves grilled chicken and cold beers until late. Churrasqueira Beira (Av. do Trabalho) is popular for its peri-peri chicken, with a half chicken costing around 350 MZN. Dinner typically starts after 7 PM, and many places stay open until 11 PM on weekends. **💰 Budget and Price Guide** Street food and snacks cost between 20 and 100 MZN, making it easy to eat well on a budget. At casual restaurants, a main dish ranges from 300 to 600 MZN, while mid-range places charge 600 to 1000 MZN. For a splurge seafood dinner, expect to pay 1000 to 1500 MZN per person. Keep in mind that prices are slightly higher in tourist areas like the Marginal, so venture inland for better deals. **🚌 Getting Around to Eat** Most of the best food spots are concentrated in the city center and along the Marginal, which are walkable during the day. For places farther out, like Mercado do Maquinino, you can take a chapa (minibus) for around 20-30 MZN, or a tuktuk for 100-150 MZN. Taxis are also available but agree on the fare beforehand. If you're visiting multiple spots, consider hiring a driver for half a day (around 1500 MZN) to make the most of your food tour.
