🏛️ Start at the Cathedral
Begin your exploration at the Catedral de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, a striking modernist structure on Praça do Município that survived the civil war. Entry is free, and it's open daily from 7am to 6pm. The view from the steps gives you a sense of the city's layout before you dive into the markets.

🚂 Ride the Old Railway
The Beira Railway Station, built in the early 20th century, is a living museum with its vintage locomotives and tiled facade. A return trip on the commuter train to Dondo (about 30 km inland) costs around 50 MZN and takes roughly 40 minutes. It's a great way to see the countryside and interact with locals.

🐟 Feast on Seafood
Head to the Mercado do Peixe (Fish Market) near the port, where fishermen bring in their catch each morning. You can buy fresh prawns, crab, or fish and have it grilled on the spot for a small fee. A hearty seafood lunch for two with drinks will cost around 800 to 1,200 MZN.

🏖️ Relax at Macúti Beach
Macúti Beach, about 30 km south of Beira, is a long stretch of white sand backed by palm trees. It's popular with locals on weekends, so visit on a weekday for more space. There are a few simple restaurants serving cold drinks and grilled chicken, and you can hire a sunshade for 100 MZN.

🛍️ Browse the Central Market
The Mercado Central on Rua da Argélia is a chaotic but fascinating maze of stalls selling everything from capulanas (traditional cloth) to spices and household goods. It's busiest in the morning, and bargaining is expected. Keep an eye on your belongings and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

🌳 Stroll the Botanical Garden
The Jardim Botânico, near the cathedral, is a shady retreat with labeled trees and a small pond. It's free to enter and open from 8am to 5pm. It's a peaceful spot to escape the heat and observe some of Mozambique's native flora.

🎭 Catch a Show at the Cultural Center
The Centro Cultural de Beira hosts theater, dance, and music performances, often featuring local artists. Check the schedule at the box office on Rua Correia de Brito; tickets usually cost between 200 and 500 MZN. It's a great way to experience contemporary Mozambican culture.

☕ Sip Coffee at a Local Cafe
Beira has a growing cafe scene, and a good spot is Cafe Sofia on Avenida Julius Nyerere. A cappuccino costs around 150 MZN, and they serve light meals and pastries. It's a comfortable place to cool off and plan your next move.

🗺️ Day 1: Historic Center
Start your first day in the historic heart of Beira, known as the Macúti area. Begin at the Cathedral of Beira (Catedral de Nossa Senhora do Rosário) on Rua da Sé, open from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and admire its colonial architecture. Then walk five minutes to the Grand Hotel, a faded Art Deco landmark at Praça do Município, and explore the nearby municipal market for local crafts. In the afternoon, visit the Museu Nacional da Moçambique (National Museum) on Rua de Farol, open 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, for a dose of history.

🍽️ Lunch and Afternoon
For lunch, head to Restaurante Beira Mar on Avenida da Marginal, where a fresh seafood platter costs around 800 MZN and is served from noon to 3:00 PM. After eating, take a 10-minute taxi ride (about 200 MZN) to the Praia Nova (New Beach) and stroll along the promenade. If you're interested in local culture, stop by the Centro Cultural Português on Rua de Moçambique, which often hosts art exhibitions and has a small café.

🌅 Evening at the Port
As the sun sets, head to the Port of Beira area to watch the fishing boats return. The waterfront near the port is lively with informal seafood stalls; try the grilled prawns at one of the makeshift stands for about 300 MZN. For a sit-down dinner, Restaurante O Pescador on Avenida 25 de Setembro offers a relaxed atmosphere and serves until 10:00 PM. End the night with a drink at the rooftop bar of the Hotel Embaixador, which has views over the city.

🏘️ Day 2: Suburbs and Markets
On day two, explore the neighborhoods of Munhava and Chota. Start at the Munhava market (Mercado do Munhava) on Avenida de Moçambique, busiest from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM, where you can sample local fruits and snacks. From there, take a chapa (minibus) for about 20 MZN to Chota, a residential area with colonial-era houses and tree-lined streets. Visit the Chota market for fresh produce and a chance to chat with locals.

🍲 Local Food Experience
For an authentic lunch, try Restaurante Tia Maria in Munhava, known for its matapa (cassava leaves with peanut and coconut) and grilled fish, with mains around 400 MZN. The restaurant is open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and gets crowded after 12:30 PM, so arrive early. After lunch, take a 15-minute taxi ride (about 250 MZN) to the Praia do Estoril, a quieter beach where you can relax and enjoy the ocean breeze.

🛍️ Shopping and Crafts
In the late afternoon, visit the Centro de Artesanato on Avenida Julius Nyerere, open until 5:00 PM, for handmade crafts, capulanas (traditional fabrics), and wood carvings. Prices are negotiable, but expect to pay around 500 MZN for a capulana. Nearby, the Shoprite supermarket on Avenida 25 de Setembro is handy for picking up snacks and water before heading back to your hotel.

🚌 Day 3: Day Trip to Dondo
Take a day trip to Dondo, about 30 kilometers west of Beira, reachable by chapa from the Munhava terminal for 50 MZN and a journey of roughly 45 minutes. In Dondo, visit the bustling market and the historic church, then hike to the nearby Dondo Hills for panoramic views. Return to Beira by 4:00 PM to avoid the evening rush; chapas run frequently until 6:00 PM.

🌙 Farewell Dinner
For your final dinner, splurge at Restaurante Clube Náutico on Avenida da Marginal, which serves excellent seafood and has a terrace overlooking the sea. Expect to pay around 1,200 MZN for a three-course meal, and reservations are recommended for weekends. After dinner, take a leisurely walk along the Marginal to soak in the ocean air and reflect on your three days in Beira.

One thing missing: catch the ferry to Nova Sofala across the estuary, cheap and quiet, though it leaves when full so go early.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

the Dondo trip is worth it but chapas from Munhava fill up fast, so go before 7am or you'll wait an hour

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

good breakdown. for day 2 i'd flip the order, hit Chota first then Munhava later, since Munhava market is chaos by 9 and chapa transfers eat time. also carry small notes, drivers rarely have change for 100s
