**🏛️ Historic Houses** Kashan's historic merchant houses are its signature attraction, and three are essential: Khan-e Borujerdi, Khan-e Tabatabaei, and Khan-e Abbasi. Borujerdi and Tabatabaei are within a 5-minute walk of each other near Alavi Street, and a combined ticket costs about 500,000 rials (roughly $1.20). Go early, right at the 8:30 am opening, to have the mirrored halls and stained glass mostly to yourself before tour groups arrive around 10 am. **🌿 Persian Gardens** The Fin Garden (Bagh-e Fin), a UNESCO World Heritage site about 6 km southwest of the center, is the oldest extant Persian garden and a masterclass in qanat-fed water channels. Entrance is 400,000 rials for foreign visitors, and it's open daily from 8 am to 7 pm in summer (to 5 pm in winter). Pair it with a visit to the nearby Fin Bathhouse, where the 1852 assassination of Amir Kabir took place, for a dose of dramatic history. **🏺 Bazaar and Crafts** The covered bazaar (Bazar-e Kashan) is a working market, not a tourist trap, and it's the best place to see coppersmiths hammering away in the Coppersmiths' Bazaar (Bazar-e Mesgarha). It's most lively from 9 am to 1 pm and again from 5 pm to 8 pm, and you can buy everything from rosewater to hand-printed textiles. Don't miss the Timcheh-ye Amin al-Dowleh, a beautifully restored 19th-century caravanserai inside the bazaar, now home to a teahouse. **🕌 Mosques and Shrines** The Jameh Mosque on Baba Afzal Street has a rare brick minaret dating back to the Seljuk period and a peaceful courtyard that sees few tourists. The Imamzadeh-ye Shahzadeh Ibrahim, a shrine with a striking blue dome, is another quiet spot; women must wear a chador, which is provided at the entrance. Both are free to enter, though donations are welcome, and they're open from morning until dusk. **🏜️ Desert Day Trips** The Maranjab Desert, about 60 km northeast of Kashan, offers sand dunes, a historic caravanserai, and a salt lake, and it's best visited at sunrise or sunset. A private taxi for the round trip costs around 2,000,000 rials (about $5) and can be arranged through your hotel; bring water and a hat. For a shorter excursion, the underground city of Noosh Abad (Ouyi), 8 km north of town, is a fascinating man-made labyrinth dating back 1,500 years, with an entrance fee of 200,000 rials. **🌹 Rosewater Season** If you visit in late April or early May, head to the rosewater distilleries in Qamsar and Niasar, about 30 km southwest of Kashan. This is when the Damask roses bloom and the air is thick with their scent; you can watch the traditional copper stills in action and buy fresh rosewater directly from producers. The annual Rosewater Festival in Qamsar usually runs for about 10 days in mid-May, but dates vary, so check locally. **🍽️ Where to Eat** For a memorable meal, try the traditional restaurant at Khan-e Borujerdi, which serves classic Kashani dishes like khoresht-e mast (yogurt stew) and saffron rice in a beautiful courtyard setting. Prices are reasonable, with mains around 800,000 to 1,200,000 rials (about $2 to $3). Another local favorite is the cozy Cafe Shazdeh near the bazaar, known for its herbal teas and homemade cakes, open from 10 am to 10 pm. **🛏️ Where to Stay** Kashan has some of Iran's best boutique hotels housed in restored historic mansions. The Manouchehri House, a beautifully renovated 19th-century merchant's home, offers rooms from about $60 per night and has a lovely courtyard restaurant. For a budget option, the traditional Noghli House provides simple rooms around $25 per night and is within walking distance of the main sights. Book ahead in spring, especially during rosewater season.
