**🏜️ Desert Adventures** Shapotou is the crown jewel of Zhongwei, where the Yellow River meets the Tengger Desert. Try the sand sliding at the Shapotou Desert Research Station, or take a cable car over the river for panoramic views. The site opens at 8:00 AM, and a combined ticket costs around 100 RMB. **🚣 River Rafting** For a unique perspective, ride a sheepskin raft on the Yellow River, a traditional local craft. These buoyant rafts drift gently from Shapotou to the nearby village, offering a slow, scenic float. The trip takes about an hour and costs roughly 80 RMB per person. **🏯 Historic City Walls** Zhongwei's old city walls date back to the Ming Dynasty and are among the best-preserved in northwest China. Walk along the restored southern section at sunset for a lovely view of the city and the distant desert. The walls are free to access, and the nearby Drum Tower is a great photo stop. **🌾 Irrigation Wonders** Visit the Shapotou Irrigation Project, a UNESCO-listed heritage site that showcases ancient water management techniques. The project includes a series of water wheels and canals that have watered the region for centuries. You can explore the site on foot or by bike, and entry is included in the Shapotou ticket. **🌃 Night Markets** As evening falls, head to the bustling night market near the Drum Tower for local street food. Try the spicy lamb skewers and the famous Zhongwei watermelon, which is incredibly sweet due to the desert climate. The market is open from 6:00 PM to midnight, and most snacks cost between 10 and 30 RMB. **🚌 Getting Around** Public buses connect the main sights, but for Shapotou, a taxi from the city center takes about 30 minutes and costs around 50 RMB. Alternatively, you can take bus route 2, which runs every 20 minutes from the train station to the park entrance. For the city walls and markets, walking is the best way to soak in the atmosphere. **📅 Best Time to Visit** The ideal months to visit Zhongwei are April through June and September through October, when temperatures are mild. Summer can be scorching, with highs above 35°C, while winters are cold and dry. Plan for early morning or late afternoon activities to avoid the midday heat.
