**🧶 Handwoven Carpets** Urumqi's bazaars are famous for hand-knotted carpets, often made by Uyghur artisans using traditional patterns passed down for generations. Visit the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar (No. 1 Jiefang South Road) for a wide selection, with prices ranging from 500 to 5,000 RMB depending on size and knot density. These carpets are not just floor coverings; they are woven stories of the Silk Road, reflecting the region's nomadic heritage and Islamic geometric art. **🎩 Uyghur Embroidered Hats** The doppa, a square or round embroidered cap, is an iconic symbol of Uyghur culture and a practical souvenir. You can find them at the Grand Bazaar or the smaller Erdaoqiao Market for about 20 to 100 RMB each. Each pattern often indicates the wearer's region or marital status, making them a meaningful piece of local identity. They are lightweight and easy to pack, perfect for a memorable gift. **🍇 Dried Fruits and Nuts** Xinjiang's arid climate produces some of the sweetest raisins, dates, and walnuts in China, and Urumqi is the perfect place to stock up. Head to the Huamao Market (No. 18 Xinhua South Road) where vendors sell by the kilo, with prices around 30 to 80 RMB per kilogram. These treats are not just snacks; they are a taste of the region's agricultural abundance, cultivated along ancient oasis routes for centuries. Buy vacuum-sealed packs for easy transport home. **🫖 Copper Teapots** Ornately engraved copper teapots are a staple of Uyghur hospitality and a beautiful decorative piece. You'll find them in the metalware section of the Grand Bazaar, with prices ranging from 150 to 400 RMB depending on size and craftsmanship. These teapots are used daily for serving puer tea, a tradition that dates back to the Silk Road era when tea was a major trade commodity. They are durable and make a unique conversation starter. **🎻 Traditional Instruments** The dutar and rawap, long-necked lutes, are central to Uyghur music and can be found in music shops around the Grand Bazaar. Prices start at 200 RMB for a simple dutar and can exceed 1,000 RMB for a professionally crafted instrument. These instruments are not just for musicians; they represent the rich oral traditions of the Uyghur people, who have preserved their musical heritage for over a thousand years. Even as a wall decoration, they carry the soul of Xinjiang. **🧣 Silk Scarves** Xinjiang is a historic stop on the Silk Road, and silk scarves with traditional Uyghur patterns are a lightweight, elegant souvenir. The Grand Bazaar has dozens of stalls selling them, with prices from 50 to 200 RMB. Look for scarves made from local silk, often dyed with natural pigments in vibrant shades of red, blue, and gold. These scarves are a wearable piece of history, echoing the caravans that once passed through Urumqi. **🗡️ Engraved Knives** The Yengisar knife, a curved blade with a carved handle, is a famous craft from southern Xinjiang and a popular collector's item. You can buy them at the Grand Bazaar, but note that they must be checked in luggage and cannot be carried on flights. Prices range from 100 to 500 RMB depending on the handle material, which can be bone, wood, or horn. These knives are not just tools; they are a symbol of Uyghur craftsmanship and a nod to the region's pastoral heritage. Always check customs regulations before purchasing. **🖼️ Desert Rose Stones** Desert rose stones, natural gypsum formations that resemble blooming flowers, are unique to arid regions like Xinjiang. You can find them at souvenir stalls in the Grand Bazaar or at the Xinjiang Geological Museum gift shop, with prices from 20 to 150 RMB depending on size. These stones are formed over thousands of years by evaporation and are a tangible piece of the Taklamakan Desert. They make a striking, low-maintenance souvenir that captures the region's stark beauty.
