**🍽️ Local Food Scene** Sao Jose do Rio Preto is a food lover's paradise in the interior of Sao Paulo state, known for its diverse culinary scene that blends traditional Brazilian flavors with contemporary twists. The city has a strong food culture, with everything from bustling street markets to fine dining restaurants. In 2026, the scene continues to evolve, with new spots opening alongside longtime favorites. Whether you're craving comfort food or something adventurous, you'll find it here. **🥘 Must-Try Dishes** Start with the classic 'prato feito' (PF), a hearty plate of rice, beans, protein, and salad that's a staple at lunch counters across the city. Another local favorite is the 'pastel de feira', a crispy fried pastry filled with meat, cheese, or hearts of palm, best enjoyed at the Saturday morning market in Praça Rui Barbosa. For something sweet, don't miss the 'bolinho de chuva' (rain cakes) at the Mercado Municipal, open daily from 7am to 6pm. **🍖 Top Churrascarias** For meat lovers, the churrascarias in Sao Jose do Rio Preto are legendary. Head to 'Churrascaria do Gaucho' on Avenida Bady Bassitt, 4500, where the rodizio (all-you-can-eat) costs around R$70 per person and includes a variety of cuts like picanha and costela. Another standout is 'Estancia Grill' on Rua Bernardino de Campos, 1200, with a similar price range and a salad bar that's a meal in itself. Both are open for lunch and dinner, but arrive early to avoid the crowds. **🍕 Pizza and Italian** The city has a strong Italian influence, and its pizza is among the best in the region. Try 'Pizzaria Bráz' on Rua XV de Novembro, 800, where a large pizza costs between R$50 and R$70 and the dough is fermented for 48 hours. For a more traditional experience, 'Cantina do Piero' on Avenida Francisco das Chagas Oliveira, 300, serves homemade pasta and wood-fired pizzas in a cozy setting. Dinner service starts at 6pm, and reservations are recommended on weekends. **🌮 Street Food and Snacks** Street food is a big part of the local culture, especially around Praça da República and the bus station. Look for vendors selling 'espetinho' (skewers) of beef or chicken for R$5 to R$8 each, grilled over charcoal and served with farofa. Another must-try is the 'pastel' at the Feira do Produtor on Sundays, where you can get a freshly fried pastry for R$6. The market runs from 6am to noon, so go early for the best selection. **🍣 Japanese and Fusion** Sao Jose do Rio Preto has a surprisingly vibrant Japanese food scene, thanks to its sizeable Japanese-Brazilian community. 'Sushi Yassu' on Rua Saldanha Marinho, 1500, offers an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet for R$60 at lunch and R$80 at dinner, with fresh fish and creative rolls. For a fusion twist, try 'Temakeria' on Avenida Anisio Haddad, 2000, where temaki and hot rolls are the stars, with prices ranging from R$25 to R$40 per item. Both places are popular, so expect a wait on weekends. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Cafes** For dessert, head to 'Doceria Amor aos Pedaços' on Rua Nove de Julho, 3000, where a slice of cake costs around R$15 and the coffee is excellent. Another favorite is 'Cafe com Prosa' on Rua Independencia, 1200, a charming cafe that serves traditional Brazilian sweets like brigadeiro and pudim, with prices from R$10. Both are open from morning until evening, perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up. **💰 Budget and Tips** Eating out in Sao Jose do Rio Preto is generally affordable, with a typical lunch at a PF restaurant costing around R$20 to R$30. Dinner at a mid-range restaurant will set you back about R$50 to R$80 per person, while street food snacks are under R$10. Keep in mind that many restaurants charge a 10% service fee, and credit cards are widely accepted. For the best value, look for the 'executivo' lunch specials offered on weekdays.
