**🏛️ Start at the State Capitol** The Louisiana State Capitol at 900 North Third Street is the tallest state capitol in the country, and the observation deck on the 27th floor offers a free panoramic view of the Mississippi River and the city. It's open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Insider tip: skip the elevator line by visiting before 10 a.m. on weekdays. Afterward, walk the surrounding gardens, which are free and rarely crowded. **🎓 Explore LSU's Campus** Louisiana State University's campus is a destination in itself, especially the LSU Museum of Art inside the Shaw Center for the Arts at 100 Lafayette Street, which charges $5 for adults and is free on the first Sunday of each month. The iconic Tiger Stadium, known as Death Valley, offers guided tours on select Fridays for $10. Don't miss the LSU Rural Life Museum on Essen Lane, a hidden gem with reconstructed 19th-century plantations and cabins for $10 admission. **🛶 Cruise the Mississippi** The USS Kidd Veterans Museum at 305 South River Road combines a restored WWII destroyer with a museum, and admission is $12 for adults. For a different perspective, take the free ferry from the downtown dock to Port Allen, which runs every 30 minutes on weekdays. Insider context: the ferry gives you skyline views without the tourist crowds, and you can bring a bike on board. **🎨 Discover Local Art** The Baton Rouge Gallery at 1442 City Park Avenue showcases contemporary regional artists and is free to visit Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Nearby, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum at 100 South River Road has a planetarium and changing exhibitions, with adult tickets at $12. For something quirky, check out the Old State Capitol at 100 North Boulevard, a Gothic castle-like building that now houses a political history museum with free admission. **🌳 Relax in City Park** City Park at 1515 Dalrymple Drive is the city's largest green space, with a 1.5-mile walking loop around a serene lake. The LSU Lakes nearby are perfect for kayaking; rentals are available at BREC's Milford Wampold Memorial Park for about $15 per hour. Insider tip: visit on Saturday mornings for the Red Stick Farmers Market at 501 Main Street, where you can grab fresh produce and local coffee from 8 a.m. to noon. **🍽️ Taste Local Flavors** You can't leave without trying a plate of crawfish étouffée at Tony's Seafood at 5215 Plank Road, a local institution where a hearty lunch runs about $12. For a more upscale take, head to Juban's Creole Restaurant at 3739 Perkins Road, known for its hush puppies and seafood gumbo, with entrees around $25. Insider context: many restaurants offer early-bird specials from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, so plan an early dinner to save. **🎶 Catch Live Music** Baton Rouge has a thriving blues and zydeco scene, and the Red Dragon Listening Room at 2401 Florida Street hosts intimate acoustic shows for $20 to $30. On weekends, check out the Varsity Theatre at 3353 Highland Road for regional bands; cover charges typically range from $10 to $20. For a classic Louisiana experience, visit Teddy's Juke Joint at 17001 Old Hammond Highway on Friday nights, where you'll find live zydeco and a cash-only bar. **🚌 Getting Around Town** Baton Rouge's CATS bus system runs throughout the city, with a single ride costing $2 and a day pass at $4; exact change is required. Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft are widely available, especially around downtown and LSU. If you're driving, metered parking downtown is $1 per hour on weekdays, but many lots offer free parking on nights and weekends. Insider tip: avoid I-10 during rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.) when traffic can double your travel time.
