if you want something totally different from the swamp or plantations, drive about 90 minutes north to Natchez. it's technically in mississippi but the river brings you there, and the bluff views over the water are gorgeous. the old downtown has a bunch of antebellum homes you can tour, but i'd skip the big formal ones and just walk around the historic district hitting the smaller spots and the natchez brewery for a beer. it's a solid change of pace from the louisiana stuff without feeling like a tourist trap

The Atchafalaya Basin is a completely different kind of trip from the plantations. You can rent a kayak or take a swamp tour out of Henderson, which is about 20 minutes west on I-10. McGee's Landing is the main spot there, and they do boat tours that get you deep into the cypress trees where you'll see gators and tons of birds. It's a half-day thing so you'd want to leave Baton Rouge by 8 or 9 to beat the heat.

You should head down to the plantations along River Road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Oak Alley and Laura are the big ones, but I actually prefer Houmas House for the grounds and the restaurant there. It's about a 45 minute drive south on I-10, then you take the Gramercy exit and follow the levee road.
