**🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes** Kanchanaburi's food scene is rooted in Thai-Burmese flavors, with a few dishes you won't find elsewhere. Start with kanom jeen nam ya, fermented rice noodles with a rich fish curry, sold at the morning market near the bridge for around 40 baht. Another local specialty is sai ua, a spicy northern Thai sausage, often grilled at street stalls along Maenam Kwai Road for 20 baht per skewer. For dessert, try khao lam, sticky rice roasted in bamboo, available at the weekend walking street for 30 baht. **🏙️ Best Neighborhoods for Food** The area around the River Kwai Bridge is packed with riverside restaurants and street food stalls. Maenam Kwai Road (also called the main tourist strip) has a mix of Thai and international options, while the local market on Saeng Chuto Road is where you'll find authentic Isaan food. For a more local vibe, head to the Talad Kao market near the clock tower, open from 6 AM to 6 PM, where vendors sell everything from pad Thai to som tam at 30 to 50 baht per plate. **🍽️ Top Restaurants to Try** Keeree Tara (address: 1/1 Moo 5, River Kwai Road) is a riverside institution known for its spicy prawn soup and crispy fish with garlic, with mains around 150 to 250 baht. For a budget-friendly option, Blue Rice Restaurant (153/4 Moo 4, Maenam Kwai Road) serves excellent green curry and pad see ew for under 100 baht. If you want a splurge, The Loft (19/4 Moo 2, River Kwai Road) offers fusion Thai dishes with a view, averaging 300 baht per person. **🛵 Street Food and Markets** The Kanchanaburi Walking Street (open Saturday evenings from 4 PM to 10 PM on Saeng Chuto Road) is the best spot for grazing, with stalls selling grilled squid, mango sticky rice, and Thai iced tea for 20 to 60 baht. For breakfast, the morning market near the bus station starts at 5 AM, offering khao tom (rice soup) and patongo (fried dough) for 25 baht. Don't miss the night market on River Kwai Road, open daily from 5 PM, where you can get a full plate of pad Thai for 50 baht. **💰 Local Prices and Budget** Street food in Kanchanaburi is incredibly affordable, with most dishes costing between 30 and 60 baht. A sit-down meal at a casual restaurant will run 80 to 150 baht per dish, while riverside restaurants charge 150 to 300 baht for mains. Beer at a bar costs around 60 to 90 baht, and fresh fruit smoothies are typically 40 baht. Budget about 300 to 500 baht per day for food if you stick to local spots. **🌙 Best Evening Food Spots** As the sun sets, the riverside restaurants along River Kwai Road light up with lanterns, creating a romantic atmosphere. Keeree Tara and The Loft are popular for dinner, but for a more casual evening, head to the night market on Maenam Kwai Road, which opens at 5 PM and stays busy until 11 PM. Another favorite is the open-air food court at the River Kwai Bridge, where you can enjoy grilled seafood and cold beers while watching the bridge illuminate at 7 PM. **🍲 Vegetarian and Halal Options** While Kanchanaburi is not overflowing with vegetarian restaurants, you can find meat-free dishes at many local stalls. Look for 'jay' (vegan) flags at the morning market on Saeng Chuto Road, where vendors serve tofu stir-fries and vegetable curries for 40 baht. For halal food, the Muslim community near the train station offers halal-certified stalls selling biryani and roti at the night market. Blue Rice Restaurant also has a dedicated vegetarian menu with dishes like tofu satay and veggie pad Thai. **🚌 Getting Around for Food** Most food spots are concentrated along Maenam Kwai Road and Saeng Chuto Road, which are walkable if you stay near the bridge. For places further out, like the morning market near the bus station, you can take a songthaew (shared truck) for 20 baht or a motorbike taxi for 50 baht. Renting a bicycle costs about 50 baht per day, and many guesthouses offer free bikes. If you're heading to the weekend walking street, it's a 15-minute walk from the main tourist area.
